Make it a 17HM2 with a carbon fiber barrel. They have a good smack to em compared to .22LR, even though they are based off the same case (HM2 is actually a necked down Stinger, not a regular .22LR.) EA Brown has a good conversion as well. Making a 10/22 into a 17HM2 is the only reason I could ever seen owning two 10/22s for. Put a better scope on it than you normally would just because they will get out there a little further for squirrels.

Gotta purdy nice scope on the one I got. No joke it will put tacks through a board at 25 to 30 yards. JJB will tell ya. Not familiar with the 17hm2... gimmee more ino. What's the cost of shooting it compared to 22lr?

Instead of buying a Ruger and then tossing 90% of it, start with the aftermarket and by the upgrades to start with.
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/ There is an entire section dedicated to the 10/22

There's a 10/22 at nitesite's house that is still Ruger because of the receiver, bolt and trigger housing.
The barrel is a Volquartsen THM carbon, with cantilever scope base on the barrel.
Stock is Volquartsen laminate, hammer/sear is Volq, bipod is Harris. The scope is the weakest link, a 4-16x50 Simmons with AO ring.
Wolf Match Extra shoots around 0.30" inch five-shot groups at 50-yards (on calm mornings) with relative ease. Several times it's been much better but that's a pretty normal standard.
Here's a old pic from a few years ago.

buy a MRI 1722 and save the money, time, and effort you'd put into the ruger, unless you're just wanting to spend the money, time, and effort.

BTW, I would never have spent the $250 for the barrel, $200 for the stock, etc to build from a base gun. I bought mine this way from a pawn shop that apparently didn't realize what the upgrades cost.
The .17 HMR option is an interesting idea, since .22LR match ammo that's worth a damn is at least $6 ~ $7 per 50, and .17 HMR is just a couple bucks more and can still be incredibly accurate at longer ranges.
Any .22LR Match ammo really falls apart fast beyond fifty yards.

HM2 is quite a bit more expensive than bulk pack .22, but still cheaper than HMR and can be used in a standard converted 10/22. All you need is a barrel and bolt assembly to convert from one to the other and back.

I got a 10/22 that came with a Synthetic Stock from Ruger. It is 100% stock except for the HiViz Sights I just put on it not long ago. It does what I need it to do, killin coons & other small critters, just fine.
I have thought about getting another to "trick out" but there are other things on my list I would like to have first since I dont see 10/22s going anywhere any time soon.
I just ran across, on another forum, someone selling a Ruger 10/22 International (Old Production Early) with no checkering on the stock in excellent condition for $350. Said it has been in his family since bought in 66-67.

I'm not into making it look like an AR w/ a bayo or turing it into a bullpup etc.
I would start with a very nice Barrel which is threaded. Upgrade the stock. Then upgrade all FCG components. Get a extended mag release. Modify or buy a Auto-Bolt Release so you dont have to fiddle with the bolt release button (I made a thread with details & a template for doing this). Then get a very nice scope made specifically for 10/22s. And finally throw a can on it. That would be tricked out IMO.

I would guess at least $750-$1000 w/o the can but including the "stock" 10/22.
10/22 parts can be rather expensive depending on what you want.

Got three birds (grouse + 2 spruce hens) just last week with my 10/22.
Picked it up a while back from another guy on the FD. He had to have some uber expensive bolt 22 with lots of glass on it. He got $150 out of me for the 10/22. Has a cheap 1.5 - 4x scope on it that still needs to get replaced. Its a shooter that eats 22 by the 550 pack and gets a few more dings in the stock everytime I drag it through the brush, which is quite often.
When I first got it I had plans of tricking it out, no time, too busy shooting it :yesnod:
Those tricked out ones are nice though

I've had over a half-dozen 10/22s run through my hands over the past 15 years or so. They don't last long, though--one of the Evil Daughters or Rotten Nephews develops a need for them, and off they go.
Right after I retired, I got the idea in my head that I needed a $1200 self-loading 22 LR. Not only that, I wanted to build it myself. You know--truck axle barrel, Hogue OM stock, VQ trigger and bolt, all the trick trash. YEAH, BABY!
About this same time (2005), I got dragged along to a summer teacher's confab in Anaheim with SWMBO. Nice hotel, week-long conference, got a couple Angels night game tickets, the whole schlimazel. Not a lot for me to do during the day, though. Off I go to the gun emporiums of Orange County.
One in particular that I like is The Stockade in Westminster. They have a VERY well-stocked reloading area, and a lot of very fine firearms as well. The stuff behind the counters WAS nice, but I make a habit of always checking the beater rack for bargains in any shop--those racks out in the middle of the floor with the whatzis 22s and single-shot 410s.
Included among the J.C. Higgins 410s and pre-Columbian Marlin finger-pull 22 bolters was a BEATER Ruger 10/22. I do mean ROUGH. The birch stock had one of those "honest use" patinas--honest use as a canoe paddle. No rust on the barrel exterior, and only a bit more bluing. Pulling the bolt back, it was gritty from firing but showed only slight wear. OK, the action is serviceable. Price? $65. Hell, why not?
After getting it home, I pulled the critter apart and gave it a good cleaning. The bore looked perfect, crown was fine, and all seemed to be in order. Might as well shoot it before REALLY taking wrenches to things.
With the stock open irons, the little rifle shot VERY well with several ammo types--as good or better than most of the previous 10/22s I've messed with. Hmmmm, says I........I bolted on a whatzis 4X scope, and gave it another range day. Bon of a sitch, this little critter can REALLY shoot! With Mini-Mag HPs, it would hold 7/8"-1" 10-shot groups at 50 yards all day long. Not Rimfire Benchrest work, but for a $65 self-loader with HV hunting ammo......I'LL TAKE IT!
That is the condition the 10/22 resides inside the safe with to this day. Moral of the story--shoot it first, it might surprise you.

Something I've been thinking about. I really like my Savage Mark II BTVRJ .22lr, but I enjoy the 10/22 alot as well. This is the plan for building one
MOA Corp SS Receiver - Would love a Volquartsen but its more than 2x the price
Kid Trigger
Volquartsen 17hm2 bolt
Boyd Barracuda Stock: Royal Jacaranda Sky & Apple Jack are possibles
Volquartsen Snake fluted barrel in 17hm2, unless I find a killer deal on a Spiral Fluted
Now for the downside, in order
180
290
240
160
400
------
$1270 -
It may be a while before it happens, I have a AR or 2, and a 300whisper in the que yet.
