View Full Version : Ransom Rest and inserts, # of settling shots ?
I went to the local gun show this morning and picked up a Ransom Rest, with the windage base and four inserts as a package deal for 400.00 It came with 1911, Smith and Wesson K frame, Smith and Wesson L/N frame and Thompson Center Contender inserts. Does anyone know where to get an SP101 insert for a discount or a place to trade inserts ? All the inserts that came with it are in new condition, but the boxes are a little bit tattered. I've read the manual through and operation seems straight forward, except for the number of settling shots isn't specified. How many shots would be enough to consider the gun settled enough to start working on groupings ? I'm planning on testing some ammo for carry in the SP101 car gun, and in the Kimber for personal carry. Thanks in advance for the information.

A heavier recoiling gun or something you cant clamp on as tight will need more shots. Possibly 20 or 30 shots.
Even a 1911 you can clamp it so tight that the trigger wont reset, Glocks the same way.
One way to tell is a lot of vertical stringing in the group. If you shoot several groups and the stringing gets less and less then you know the gun is settling in.
If you shoot several groups and there all about the same then youre getting what the gun can deliver

Here is a pic to illustrate. 3 10 shot groups at 50 yards. 1st group, 4" + vertical stringing, 2nd 3", 3rd group close to 2" and getting to what the gun can do.

Perfect !
Thanks for the pic AdamN. I'm going to go to the range this week and see if I can find out which ammo does the best in my Kimber. I found I can order the inserts from Brownell's and Midway USA and ordered an insert for the SP101. As soon as it arrives I will take it out and see what results I get
