I thought you guys might like a review of a handgun I don't think is available to you yet.

I have had my Grand Power K100 Patrol for about three years now. It is a 9x19mm DA/SA action gun a la the CZ75, with a polymer frame. In fact the designer, Jaroslav Kurcina, worked for CZ before striking out on his own.

The most noteworthy feature of this gun is the rotating locking barrel. It utilizes a "roller" mounted across the metal frame insert that the barrel's camming surface rides on.

This gives the gun a mild recoil impulse that is unlike any other 9mm I have fired. It is very soft shooting. Comparing it side by side with my Hi-Power firing ther same load, it recoils noticeably less.

All of the internals are mounted on the metal frame insert. The feed ramp is also incorporated into the insert, leaving the barrel to fully support the round.

The barrell uses a single, massive locking lug that locks the barrel very tightly in the slide.

The extractor is a simple bent piece of metal internal to the slide. It is held in place by a spring and plungerand is very easy to remove for thorough cleaning.

The magazines hold 15 rounds as originnaly designed, but 10 rounders are available for those of us not responsible enough for the originals (sense the sarcasm?). CZ75 magazines can be modified to work by drilling a hole in the front of the mag. Then they will function in both guns.

All controls are completely ambidextrous. One knock against it is that the slide stop and safeties are flat (but snag free) and difficult to manipulate. The safety comes off easy, but is hard to engage without shifting your grip. The magazine release works well from either side.

The double action pull is a bit heavy, but smooth (listed at 35N, whatever that works out to) and the single action is also quite good and listed at 25 Sir Isaac's. The reset is a very short 3mm, or just under 1/8". You can get off accurate follow up shots rapidly. For military and LE there is a two round burst version and a full auto version.

All in all an interesting gun with a comfortable grip that fits both large and small hands. It is more accurate than I am, is well made and the unique rotating barrel makes it worth taking a close look at. I sure like mine! There is more info at www.grandpower.eu (http://www.grandpower.eu).

Wow...thanks for the pics and write-up.

IMO that thing looks fugly but looks are not a decisive factor for a self defense weapon. There also appears to be a lot of tool marks on the inside of the slide (maybe he carried that over from the CZ design:)) but I doubt they will cause any problems.

The design is interesting. It looks like it has a rather low bore axis which is also a contributing factor to the low perceived recoil. How much do those cost?

The sights look interesting. Do you have a picture of the sight picture. Are these available in the US?

The machine marks cause no issues. The sights on my model are just a standard three dot set up. The target version has adjustable rear sights and a FO front.

I paid $595cdn for mine when they first became available up here. I think they run $700-$800 now, depending on which model. I know there are plans to import them to you guys, but I don't know if they are available yet. You can check out their website for more details. They had a neat video of the FA version.

Seems similar to the Beretta PX4 Storm. With the rotating barrel.

I believe the Storm uses a bit different system, with a pin that fits into a slot to cause the rotation. I've never actually seen one of those myself though so I could be wrong.

True, the system seems to be different, just from looking at the machining marks in the barrel. Does the K100 torque in your hand? That's a comment/complaint about the Beretta.

That is cool! Thanks Frost!

Does the K100 torque in your hand? That's a comment/complaint about the Beretta. Not really. It's difficult to describe the recoil. It feels kind of "slow". Noobs seem to like shooting it better than my other autos.

Just did the conversion. 35N is 7.9 lb (DA) and 25N is 5.6 lb (SA).

It looks like STI international is carrying the MK VI frame version as the GP6. Their website shows it as $656.44

Well rather then speculate, I called STI. They are expecting their first batch of guns next week. So yes they are available but no not right now. Just one week out.

Big Slick is right. This thing should be a 10mm/40 type king.

I bet it a be all that an a bag a chips in 45 ACP or 10mm, maybe even fotay I know there were plans to eventually produce it in "that American calibre" (.45).

You can contact Jaroslav at info@grandpower.eu with a wish list. He has made changes to the original design based on feedback from the guys on his European IPSC team and owners on the canadiangunnutz forum.

Enough demand could see it happen

Actually the bore axis is very high. Lots of flip. If you want to see a low bore axis look at a Glock.
