So I've been slowly & very carefully loading my very first batch. (.40s&w) Measuring every single powder charge & checking every single OAL. I'm doing .1gr increments. Five of each charge increment from 5.5gr WSF to 6.5gr WSF. I'm using 1.130" OAL +- .01". I'm pretty much using data straight off of Hodgedon's site. I'm using a 165gr FMJ- they only have data listed for a 170gr JHP I think but the data is very similar to every other resource I've seen.

SO... anyone see any problems with all that? Is 5 samples of each charge weight sufficient to have confidence in the test results? I'm a little nervous about the long OAL being functional in my G23, but I guess I'll find out how that works when I'm at the range. I know I should check this, but, lets just say I haven't had the appropriate oportunity. :ow:

Check your OAL against a factory round.

Work up slowly in .2 gr steps, .1 gr is in the margin of error of the scale.

5 should be fine, I work up in groups of 10.

5 grs is negligible, you'll be fine.

My scale is a little more accurate then most. I dropped the coin on a nice one. http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=297

WWB OAL averages 1.125", Hodgedon's data is for 1.135", but my OAL fluxuates sometimes up to 1.140- and that's quite long for a .40 compared to everything I've been able to find on the interweb.

Did you make up a couple of dummys at that OAL, load em up and try to cycle them?

No. That's what I was saying... I haven't had an oportunity to. I'm doing my reloading in a different location then my gun right now. I didn't have access to it, so I figured I'd just wing it & keep my fingers crossed.
