Went to wally world the other day and noticed an 870 express w/composite stock for $269. I originally wanted something with a shorter barrel, a "tactical" model if you will.

I figure for the price, I could cut the barrel down to legal limit (because I don't plan on using it for anything but occassionally shooting at the range, and home defense).

What do you guys think? Have any of yall cut one down or have a good tacticool model? (boom-stick porn)

My 2 cents Slow. Get yaself a used 870 Wingmaster. Old hat. Best platform they is in pump splatterguns IMO. Build it up from that.

Remington 870 and Mossberg 590 are the only two shotguns I care for, and I've owned a lot of high dollar tactical shotguns in the past. JJB is 100% correct in recommending a used 870 and then building it up if you want to go that route. If all you want is an 18" shotgun than I'd try to trade barrels before I cut one down. Cutting one is a breeze w/a pipe cutter but you need to add a 1/2 to the length to allow for dressing and trimming.

I second JJB about a Wingmaster. I carried an 870 with a smoothbore slug barrel as a deputy sheriff back when. The machined bar steel and ultra smooth action of an older 870 is superior to the new Remington guns.

But I have to confess, I do not own an older 870 right now. Not that I don't want to, but I've had a Mossberg 590 20" 8+1 with ghost ring sights as my defense shotgun for many years now and that's what my muscle memory recognizes in the dark.

Take a look at da new Benelli Novas.

Tacticool an cheap, work real good too.

Buddy a mine got one wit ghost rings, he fast wit it an he picked up another barrel for about $120 so he could dove hunt wit it too.

He good on da range, but a pump anythang ain't gonna put no whole lotta dove on da table in Texas

They lightenin fast

Just a suggestion.. when you cut a shotgun barrel down to the "legal Limit" add a 1/2 inch (insurance) to that legal limit. May never ever need it but that 1/2 in. can keep you out of trouble especially if someone is using a short tape measure. Same goes when you shorten a rifle barrel.

find a beat to **** 870 and send that sum bitch to wilson combat fir daer "remington steal" package.

it will run you $230, there are some options that you can choose through for a few extra bux, some are worth it. i got to handle one of these package guns, and one of their border patrol guns side by side before they left the shop. not any difference that i could tell.

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/index_sgt.htm

i have a feeling that in the next year or so, i will have found my beater for this.

Actually my hd shotgun is the same- with a composite speedfeed stock on it. Ilike the park'd finish and overall it handles well for its intended use. ( the bullpup is an oddity i bought just cuz i wanted it....)

I don't have an assault splattergun right now. :blush2: I gave my tricked out 870 to my sil a couple a years ago. Sad to say, he no longer has it. :nonod:

My only complaint with the Mossberg pumps is their dinky thumbsafety. I don't object to a thumbsafety at all - just that it's the weak point of their design. A Rem 870 has a crossbolt safety that is mounted in the triggerguard and is less likely to become stuck or break off.

BTW, neither one is really a "safety" in the strictest sense - they are triggerblocks and won't keep the weapon from discharging in the event of a hard jarring blow that releases the sear.

Three of my goose-hunting buddies have broken the thumbsafety switch off their Mossbergs while twisting around with gloved hands to get in position for a good shot. Excitement and adrenalin sur la chasse caused them to snap 'em right off. To Mossberg's credit, they promptly fixed them up, but until then, they had a shotgun that required a thin knifeblade to render it on safe or off safe.

IMO, the gun to try to get is a Winchester M-12 that has already had its barrel hacked off. I've seen several come through the used racks at my nearby Cabela's. They are more expensive than a Wingmaster, but are reduced well below an un-abbreviated one - ~$300 for a really nice one in 12ga, much less for a beater.

The M-12 carries 6 and most of them can be fired as fast as you can operate the slide - just hold down the trigger. A great-uncle carried one in the WWI trenches in France. He would never tell the stories, but my grandpa (his older brother) said that he bought one for himself shortly after he got back.

I'm not to crazy about the vent rib barrels either, although I never thought about an injection!?

I'm looking into the Mossberg persuader now. If I do go with the 870 I saw, I plan on leaving 1/2" for "safety" sake. I prefer going with one that's already made for what I want, but $269 is a pretty good deal for an 870.

870, several of the top trap shooters of the 50s 60s & 70s put close to 1,000,000 rounds through theirs. The express and the wingmaster are the same action, degree of fit and polish is different. Get the express, slather polishing compound on the action rods and any place the bolt rubs and work that slide like Freakshow works his Star for a half hour or so. It'll be real slick. Cheaper than a Wingmaster and you don't bubba the finest duck and goose gun ever made.

Whatever I find won't see alot of action, I like shootin' my G22, and G19 too much. I'd like to have a good boom stick for the house, and occassional range time. I saw a Mossberg Persuader that came with pistol grip, and full stock, can't remember how much though.

That Mossberg JIC don't look too bad either. 870 hard to beat though.

If you look, sooner or later you can find a carried much shot little police, corrections or agency Wingmaster specimen for not so much dinero. A great choice for many reasons.

If you have access to a police supply store I recommend trying there first. Police shotguns get traded around regularly (all the new boys have to have the newest and fanciest etc). They don't usually look pretty but are seldom shot other than qualification time at the department. An 18-inch Remington 870 will do the trick.

Of course I have a Winchester Defender in my trunk. Plus I downgraded the plastic on it to good ol' head thumpin' wood.

What part of Tn are you in slowride, I can't recall but you told me once. I've got a police trade in 870 with synthitic stocks and 20" oc barrel I had built up already with sights. Don't use it at work because I've got a duty shotgun, don't need it at home because I've got other 870's and a Mossy 500A. Might be perswaded to trade it or otherwise part with it for a buddy for what I've got in it.

Might work in your favor jjb. The media have a hard time puttin' the bad light on a man with a sportin' gun and them pygmies won't know what hit 'em. I almost feel sorry for them I do.

Sometimes longer barrel is better. The police shotguns we use for instance. the 14" are so choked they kick alot harder than the 18".

Mine is a used 870 wingmaster with Hogue overmoulded stocks and a sawed off barrel 18".

I prefer an 18", a 20" will do though.
