View Full Version : Is transporting ammo loose in a bucket OK?

Is there any problem with just carting the ammo around loose in a bucket or ammo can?

Usually I put my ammo in MTM boxes, but I currently have allot more loaded ammo than boxes. So last Friday I just brought a small bucket of 45s to the range. Is there a problem with that? Do I need to worry about setting off a primer?

I kind of justified it in my mind because the Winchester value pack ammo is sold loose in a box. Only difference is the Winchester box has 100 and the bucket probably had closer to 1000. In addition I never herd of one going off in the akrobin attached to the press.

I need to order a few dozen more MTM 100 round boxes but they wont be in by this Friday when I shoot again.

I wouldn't worry. As long as your primers are below flush, not to worry. It takes a good hit to set off a primer. I usually bring my ammo in a 5 gallon bucket unless I'm there for load development, then I have the cute boxes.

I transport just about all my ammo in cans.

I use boxes for premium loads for storage where I can keep it handy

Never had one go bang when it wasn't supposed to yet

I use Zip-Loc baggies and recycled food ziplocks from the grocery. Fill in increments of 50. Easy to pour into from the Acrobin and easier to grab a handful when refilling mags. Use your imagination when reloading in the sun during a match out of an unwashed stinky cheese baggie. Puts some of the competition off their feed.

not being a caster (yet) - I bought 10k of Berry's coated from Cabela's prior to the price increase - that's given me 40 black bullet boxes which hold my loaded ammo - just dump the stuff in right from the akro - I do have a few little boxes of 50 though.

Cans, boxes, breadbags, tortilla bags, waffle bags, ziplocks(used, thank you), and mah pockets. Been known to use a WalMart bag or two...Don't count 'em, don't talk to 'em, treat 'em like dead red headed stepchillren. Then I do the same to theys cases.

Lots of places sell ammo cans full of loose reloads and ship 'em all over the place.

I store it in cans and transport it in boxes. 10 boxes is only ~$10 from Midway. Miwall sells most of their ammo in cans no problem. I suppose if you have FMJ rifle rounds and you dropped it with a round in exactly the wrong position you could have a problem but if you are that unlucky you are probably screwed anyway.

I like to box up my handloaded ammo as the final QC check. That's usually where I find a high primer, a chunk of shaved lead smeared down a case, or a funky-looking round that may not chamber.

Also, I like to keep batches of ammo separated by reloading session, powder lots, etc. You never know when you might have to pull a batch. Years ago, I was loading shotgun shells on a progressive and noticed to my horror that the powder hopper was empty. I had loaded several hundred rounds that evening and had pitched them into a large common bucket with the same load parameters - and had no clue which had a powder charge and which didn't.

It may seem like a waste of time, but I like to box 'em up.

Yeah, I like boxing for that reason as well. I will not put them in a can unless I am sure they are what I consider A grade meaning all of the primers and powder are the same lot, bullets the exact same type and everything went well (powder measure was dead-on every time I checked it etc.) If anything is off or it is some skanky brass I put it in a box and grade it B or C. It gets shot first.

Those blue plastic Maxwellhouse Coffee containers with the handle and gold snap on lid are perfect for ammo and components. Actually switched from Folgers to Maxwellhouse just for the container. Check em out.
