I have a pump Mossy 500 with the Camo finish, that every once in awhile will dump a round out of the bottom. I don't know if it's me or if it's done by the recoil of the shotgun going off. A couple of times it seemed like it dumped a round before I even started to pull on the slide. Weak spring somewhere, maybe?

I'd guess spring. Maybe it needs to be stripped and cleaned. but most likely spring.

Shellstops worn or broken.

I had thought it was more than likely me trying to pump it too fast, but yesterday while shooting a sporting clays competition it would do it occasionally. A couple of times I know it did it with just the recoil.......I know a pump isn't exactly the best thing for Sport Clays, maybe I'll get me a O/U soon. It sure is hell on dove though.

57 out of a 100 birds....better than I did first time. Still outshot my group of friends I was shooting with, If I was more serious about doing that kind of thing I'd have me a O/U or a semi for sure. Kind of hard to do sporting clays with a pump, but lots of people do it. Kind of embarrasing when you got a pump and you lose a live round out of the bottom. The two loudest noises in the world are a bang when you expect a click, and a click when you expect a bang.

I would look at shell stops, as CW stated. Dead give-away to this issue is if a 3"-chambered shotgun feeds 3" shells fine, but screws up on the 2-3/4" loads. This is the sole weakness of the Mossbacks over the Rem 870, which is WITHOUT DOUBT the most deputy-proof battle implement ever devised by man.
A skilled operator of a slide action can keep up with any autoloader ever made, including Benellis. The advantage gained with the self-loader is recoil attenuation. Where the slide action "fails" is due to operator error, short-stroking the action will screw things up.

I've never shot any 3" shells through it ,but it is a 3" gun.
