"...but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen."
This is my M1
My M1 is super fine to shoot. I got it from the CMP. Back in august I heard (from a guy at GT) that that CMP had a rifles ready to ship. The monday after I heard the good news I ordered mine. I was expecting to have to wait many weeks if not months. However two weeks to the day I get a knock on the door. I signed and the rifle was mine. I Oiled up the wood a little and she cleaned up real nice.
I also now own something like 3000 30-06 cartridges. It is all greek. I would have liked to have gotten in on the Lake City that was around but I missed out.
Just so you know both the receiver and the barrel are dated it 1944. I think the receiver is March. I am not sure she would have seen any action but maybe. Also it is all SA.

Why, just save up some coin and get one. I know saving the coin at times can be hard but a little at a time and you will have it. Bush's tax rebate would just about be right for a service grade.
Your retired card will save you from having to join a CMP recognized club and should meet the range requirement. Check out the requirements.
As for the Greek ammo vs Lake City.....I've found the Greek might be better shooting. I know, I'm talking treason.

Man, tax rebate is already accounted for. So far it is costing me almost $800 to get this job. The kiddo needs new clothes, the AC in my van is about to go out, which will make for a wonderful cross country drive next week, and I have NO clothes I can wear on this job...not sure where that money is going to come from. We have debt you wouldn't believe and not getting paid/having a job for the last 3 months has put us so far in the hole that it isn't even funny. Hopefully, if all goes well we should be about 75% debt free after one year of working at this job but you, me and Murphy all know that just about when **** gets caught up on a car engine blows...or whatever else happens that takes away your toy money...just the way it always seems to be when I really, really want something. Maybe the new job will change the karma...just gotta wait and see I guess. I know...quit my beeachin and wait for things to settle down. I'm just a little frustrated and venting. I'm sure it will happen someday, if I make an absolutely off limits piggy bank somewhere nobody knows about and continue to add to it, even if it is just $20 a payday...just can't let anybody else know about it because then when stupid stuff comes up my gun fund always seems to be the first thing hit. Anyway...that enough violin playing for me...lol.

Nice gokyo, I've never tried to go through ODCP for anything and can't for the life of me figure out why I didn't. Without a doubt I qualify due to LE range training and qualifications, just haven't jumped in the ring yet. Thank's for the reminder.

Layusn1,
Hey, no problem from me.....been there, done that and got the old T-shirt. I stopped shooting High Power for 12 years. I had some ammo but no rifle. Family always comes first.
I knew what I wanted to do after life in the Navy but had to convince someone I needed to work there. I was working but not making very much $. The job didn't really pay all the bills and depleted most of our savings even with retirement $.
6 mos after I retired I was hired by the agency I work for now. Pay isn't all that hot but it does pay the bills. Not having growing kids in the house anymore helps too. It will get better for you.
I'm charging the camera batteries now so don't hit me when I post up a pic of my M-1's on Slicks threads. Do look at ElRon's links....good place to spend a little time and one day $. You will never loose any $ on a CMP rifle.

Kidcop,
I know things will look better soon. I'm just belly achin. I'm sure we all have reasons for not having the dream arsenal we want. If I didn't go through $60 a pay period in dip that would help. If I didn't spend so much on reloading gear and components, that would help. Thankfully I am almost done buying gear so that should help. My daughter is 16 so 18 and out isn't far off and that should help. Maryland is cheaper than here...before you call BS consider utilities and car insurance. Lots of things are gonna change soon and I reckon I will have some new toys within a year. I like drooling over y'alls pictures...gives me something to dream about and save for.

There is nothing better than going to the range and blowing the #$%^@# out of stuff that some other dude is shooting at with his cute little AR.
I have gotten quite a few "what the hell is that?" They definitely fire with authority.

I think mine dated to '42. Shoots well. I foolishly thought that since it was so heavy it wouldn't kick as much as my bolt action 30-06. I was wrong!!

I dunno...I shot my Mosin Nagant right after shooting the M1...I gotta say...if the rifles are both screamin check me out...I think the Mosin Nagant wins. It was overcast here Saturday and my buddy that brought the M1 just said holy ****...look at that fireball. When it comes to felt recoil, the M1 taps you in the shoulder, the Mosin Nagant mule kicks you. Just my 2 cents.
Still...I want one of them bastidges....more than Slick wants free lead...or the perfect 'cue...lol.
Think Slick would star in his own version of Endless Summer? Searching for the perfect 'cue...

Shot the Mosin. Didn't hit what I was aiming at and it hurt my shoulder. 2 things that I don't like! I like owning a bunch of different guns, but I'll pass on that M-N!!

Hmmm...my Polish Mosin Nagant, with bayonet extended, shoots just as accurately as his M1. Maybe you got a hold of one with a fairly shot out bore like my Russian.

Sergeant Hartman holds up a rifle. "You will
give your rifle a girl's name. This is the only
pussy you people are going to get. Your days of
finger-hanging ol' Mary Jane Rottencrotch through
her pretty pink panties are over. You're married
to this piece, this weapon of iron and wood, and
you will be faithful."

I shot a John C. Garand match last weekend, screwed up and came in 3rd. I need to break out the Greek and practice some more. I hadn't shot my service grade since Perry last year.
I loaned my field grade to a guy who showed up but didn't have a M-1 to shoot. I think he did all right with it. I shimed the trigger guard on this rifle to tighten it in the stock. Not really legal but we were not trying to cheat, just getting another shooter on the line. I also stuck a new op rod spring in it the night before and was happy to see it functioned 100%.
I ran the line for a "Mad Minute." This is where you have 60 seconds to get as many rounds down range as you can with only those in the black counting as 1 point. I didn't want to put my rifle though this but really I don't think it would have hurt anything. I think the most anyone got down range was 4 clips, or 32 rounds. The guy who won shot 3 clips and had some saved rounds with 17 in the black.
Any way I let a guy talk me into bringing his M-1 home as he thought it wasn't shooting as good as it should be. The trigger was horrid. I fixed that but I might still go a bit more on it as it is really close. (1/2 a blond female pubic hair worth of creep) Still it's 100 times better than it was.
The gas cyl. moved fore and aft. The guy claimed the screw was tight....not. It was only finger tight. After I got it tight I found side to side movement. So I peened the center spline. No movement in the gas cly. now. I also relieved the back hand guard so it isn't tight on the reciever. There was a ton of copper in the barrel which I cleaned out. I greased her up were grease goes and I hope the rifle will shoot better for the guy now. The price is right........$0.

Kidcop, I see now, you're a guru.
Where did you find a garand with USMC MATCH on the barrel?
got 1954 issue with birch stock and gaged 1 on throat/muzzle
shoot it infrequently as the m1a/ar10 get most of the workout, but it still shoots 2moa with .mil ball ammo

Anvil, I'm not a guru by any means. There are a couple of things I know how to do but beyond that, I'm lost. If a new op rod spring, gas cly. or a new button on the op rod won't fix it, I have to make a phone call.
I also replied to your PM on the USMC match
