"...but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen."

As requested a picture of my M1

My M1 is super fine to shoot. I got it from the CMP. Back in august I heard (from a guy at GT) that that CMP had a rifles ready to ship. The monday after I heard the good news I ordered mine. I was expecting to have to wait many weeks if not months. However two weeks to the day I get a knock on the door. I signed and the rifle was mine. I Oiled up the wood a little and she cleaned up real nice.

I also now own something like 3000 30-06 cartridges. It is all greek. I would have liked to have gotten in on the Lake City that was around but I missed out.

Just so you know both the receiver and the barrel are dated it 1944. I think the receiver is March. I am not sure she would have seen any action but maybe. Also it is all SA.

That's pure sexy! How much do those cost?

I think I paid 495 plus 25 bucks for shipping. It was, I think, service grade. The price for a servive grade has gone up to 595.

But that is still a hell of a bargain. I see ones that look like they have been drug behind a truck selling for 1000.00 at my local gun show.

Here, I hope is a pic of my M-1's

The top M-1 is match tuned and in 3006 short.

The middle M-1 is my Service grade which was rebuilt by the CMP for me when I complained about the barrel. It has a new Barrel, op rod, trigger group, bolt and a new front sight.

The botom M-1 is my Field grade with a VAR barrel. It's the one witht he poor fitting stock. Be sure to "click" on the pic to make it bigger. More photo's of theNM coming.

I believe the NM (National Match) apertures are smaller than standard.

This is the best place:
http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm

Might as well save yourself some shipping and buy 2 right away. CMP has great deals on ammo too.

If looks make you want one wait until you shoot one.

Here are three of mine. I have since gotten a fourth. Top is a Breda, then Springfield, then correct H&R.

Kidcop, is the Garand a gun you can make high master with? Or do you need a special built AR?

Anvil, it would be difficult to make High Master anytime soon with a M-1. There are a couple of reasons. The cost of 168 SMK's has gone way up so the over alll cost of ammo is up. And you will need trigger time. The M-1 has too much recoil. I do believe the '06 M-1 recoils less than a 308. Maybe it just me, I don't know. However, I am also a firm believer a 30 cal rifle will teach you how to stay in position. If you can shoot good groups in sitting and prone with a 30, then shooting the AR will be a piece of cheeze.

I do think the M-1 has a way cool factor on the line. I'm shooting a John C. Garand match this coming weekend with a stocker as I do enjoy the M-1. But if I'm real serious about a match then I'll shoot an AR.

The AR is a pretty easy build compaired to an M-1. Depending on what you spent on the M-1 to start with, building a M-1 to run with what's on the line today is going to be expensive. My M-1 was about $1064.00 total back in 2002 and gone for 16 months. But the rifle was only $164.00 from the old DCM. My first AR was just under a $1000.00. I got a good deal on a RRA NM lower and I had a White Oak Precision upper built. I liked the first upper so well I had another built which took 14 weeks from order to door step. RRA has a NM rifle which right out of the box will take you to High Master. This comes from a guy who believes only real men shoot a 30.

A quick pic of my SA.
It was one of the Danes, less wood that I put in a CMP stock which was horribly oversized.

I'm still sanding it, getting ready to refinish. I stuck the action in it to take a pic.

And one of my H&R. It came with a cracked handguard. I bought one from Boyds. It needs some BLO.
