Does an older production 336 (it is not called a 336w or 336c or 336a) have a walnut stock or did they build some with hardwood stocks. The rifle in question is a 1970 or so production model.
Can cast bullets be shot satisfactorally in the rifle.

Yes, but you want to keep your velocities, like with any cast bullet, on the lower side. Check the Lyman manual. They have a good guideline on what velocities are the max.

The 336 Marlin is a great rifle and yes they did use hardwood stocks on some of the 1970's models. The thing to remember in shooting cast bullets in a Marlin is to make sure it is properly sized to the bore as the gas escaping around it increases leading. I like using gas check cast bullets in my stainless steel 30-30 Marlin. I'd also love to get my hands on an late 70's model 35 Remington and 44 Magnum in 336.
