I had one of the Series 70 Colts that was pretty finicky, so when my Father-in-Law gave us his WWII P.T.O. Commemorative, I was anxious to try it out. It shot circles around my Series 70 and operates well with a variety of bullet designs, so the plain one got sold. I installed Novak combat sights, some Kimber checkered grip panels, and an extended safety (since this pic was taken). Nice Sunday-go-to-meeting-gun.

Here's the Charles Daley I picked up back in October. The bbl it came with had a crummy bore and after posting a question on one of the 1911 forums the president of Charles Daley (Michael Kassnar) PM'd me.
He sent a call tag and within 2 weeks I had my gun back with a brand new bbl. I thought that was pretty cool.76

Had one on my Para (in the pic). Ugly as all get out, but I found it forces me to use my finger pad rather than the joint. Long, flat triggers are my favorite. The Para one is a Dawson, made only for fatties. Hard to find a single stack long, flat. Brownells is hit and miss. Sometimes they have them, sometimes not.

That kinda looks like that GP100 Freak picked up awhile back. When you say you picked it up in the parking lot, did it happen to be under a truck tire? Just kidding, I love guns that show they've been used! Nothing better on a gun than holster wear showing it ain't been sitting in a gun safe its whole life.

Here is my Delta Elite. Some days it is a 10mm. Othertimes it is a .40 S&W. In this picture, it is a 357 SIG. Some times I load my 357 SIGs to 10mm length, and call it a 357 Grendelbane!
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/grendelbane6/deltaelite357sig.jpg
It has also been a 9x19, but don't tell any one, because that is supposed to be unpossible.

09-08-2008, 07:30 PM
Here are a couple of home builds. The parkerized frame is a Doublestar frame with a genuine Colt slide, in .45 ACP. Sort of an economy build. The two-tone is a 9x23mm Winchester, again with genuine Colt slide, (wasn't E-Bay wonderful at one time?), though some times it is also a .38 Super, and some times a 9x19.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/grendelbane6/45and9x23.jpg
I am considering a long slide for my next project. Some times these projects move slowly, however.

grendelbane
09-08-2008, 08:37 PM
Might as well show this one, too. The frame still carries the original Colt blue, but the slide was so worn and blotched that I used it for an experiment in rust bluing. This one didn't want to co-operate, but it was still a big improvement over what I had before. I understand that Sprinfield Armory did actually rust blue some M1911s.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/grendelbane6/38superrustbluegammaJPG.jpg
Another .38 Super slide I tried to rust blue turned out much better. Variation in steel is the only reason I can come up with, as I was using Pilkington's blue on both of them, and every other condition was identical. Now if I can just find an old worn shotgun to practice my rust bluing techniques on. That would be a better subject, I think.

This is a little 9 MM steel gun I built many years ago that I am going to try out in some of the local shoots. Clark ramped barrel, Essex frame that has been lightened and an unknown slide that has been reduced considerably in weight. Comp is a three port aluminum set up. The scope mount is a custom done up by my 'smith for our race guns back in the early 90's.

This was the first one ever done on a Commander and was Metalloyed by Tim Tierney. It was the last pistol that Tim did prior to moving Metalloy to Arkansas AFAIK It was my first comp gun and it became an addiction after that!!:yikes2:

This is a Gold Cup that I have worked over during the past year. It shot it's first PPC match today and did very well. I will redo the trigger as it just seems a bit to heavy during the match. It will also be getting mounted up in a Ransom Rest as I shot a full IPSC Major load today and PPC is not the place for that kind of power. I think I can find a target level load that will work with some spring trading.
It has a Barsto barrel that I won at a USPSA Nationals several years ago, an Ed Brown beaver tail and a McCormick hammer/sear set.

That's the kind of piece a lot of outfits selling 1911's want you to think you're buying. Back in the 80's, most of the now pedigreed smiths or shops weren't nearly as widely known.
Back then, a nice full house custom from Ross Carter, Ed Brown or Bill Laughridge (and others) would get you a work of art that functioned flawlessly.
There are still some good ones out there, but for every good one, there seems to be 10 wannabes
Beautiful guns - I especially like the Commander

Here is my first, bought back in the disco days. Unfortunately, the original stocks got destroyed in a horrible accident. So, I thought she deserved new shoes. The water buffalo bone stocks were dyed last night with regular Rit dye. There have been a couple of other changes over the years, trigger and mainspring housing and sights. I wish every thing from my youth had survived in this condition, however.

Nice! Thanks for posting that. What lengths are all those barrels?
The barrel lengths are 8", 6", 5", and 4.5" lengths. All are Bar-sto barrels.
All the other parts are fitted Gold Cup. All work was done by Jim Hoag.
This very pistol appears in George Nonte's Combat Handguns edited by Ed Ezell.

8" barrel on a Gold Cup - very nice
I'd have a hard time shooting anything else for a long while if I had a setup like that.
Jim Hoag is among the best of the best where 1911 work is concerned, true craftsmanship and old school standards of fit and finish on everything I've seen that passed thru his hands.
Incredible setup all the way Ramon

I purchased a .22 Colt conversion slide and barrel. Jim hand fitted it to this pistol and it's a fun thing to shoot. That slide is not displayed in the image I've posted here.
As an aside, This work was done by Jim Hoag in the late 70's. Irv Stowe the founder of Bar-sto broke so many broaches in making this barrel for Jim, that he swore he'd never make another. As far as I know, I don't think another was ever made after this particular speciman.
For me, this is a legacy pistol that will remain in my family for as long as I can possibly arrange. The attached picture shows the next generation shooter in my family, my son is pictured here about 15 years ago at a local range. On the shooting bench top is this pistol. My Son calls it his "birth right." That it is...
This is my family's future in the shooting game after I'm gone.

I like the whole idea of the gun being a legacy.
I've passed on a few over the years and never regretted it.
Last specimen I saw Hoag worked on was a really custom Commander. I wanted it, but couldn't swing it financially as $1400 was a gold mine worth of cash to me then (still is).
Hand fitted all the way thru, not too tight, but zero slop in it if that makes any sense. Flat top slide with custom controls made just for that gun.
Sweet in every respect. The fellow who bought it passed away back in the late 80's and nobody I know knows what happened to the gun.

I should add that its been my distinct privilege to have know, Jim Hoag for over 30 years. During that time he's worked on many of my pistols and BAR NONE his craftmanship is superior.
He's from a time when Armand Swenson was in his heyday, and craftmanship was the real deal.
He is a sweet, sweet man. The genuine deal.

Ross Carter was the same way.
I knew Ross for many years. After the fire, things were never the same.
Hoag, Carter and Bill Laughridge in my opinion are head and shoulders above others and most if not all pedigreed 'smiths working today.
Alex Hamilton is about the best there is nowadays, but, getting one of his (true custom) guns is almost impossible.
The Les Baer, Wilson Combat, NightHawk and Ed Brown stuff is nice, just not in the same arena.
Old school craftsmanship is all but gone

A 45 I shoot in IPSC, PPC and BE. Started out as a 38 Super then 38 Special and finally a 45. Built by Richard Curtis of El Reno, Oklahoma in the style of Dick Shokey.
