I don't remember exactly who it was but I think it was Col Rex Applegate. who had his home fortified and burglar proofed and armed to the teeth living in the desert and a burglar broke in and killed him.

From my experience as a dealing with criminals both as a jailer and police, the only true effective crime deterant is to kill the sombitches that break in a house. There's no parole from a bullet.
