So last Saturday, before I came on shift, they had banned two folks. I came to find out, they were walking around in BDU's and wearing polo's saying police. Both had body armor under their shirts, and one had a gun belt with a loaded pistol (didn't find out what caliber). Apparently, the other dude ditched a pellet gun in the trash, leading to engineering having to pull apart a compactor, and housekeeping having to dig through all the wonderful trash coming from the food court. The two guys would up stating that they had NO idea they were doing something wrong, when they got arrested....

As an LEO I'm flattered that other people want to be like police but there's a right and a wrong way to do that.

I took a guy to jail last night who happened to be wearing a t-shirt that read "I'm a POLICE OFFICER - now spread 'em". All the laughs he got at the county jail made him feel "special".

Can a LEO pretend to be a different LEO? Like FBI pretending to be local PD?

I have no idea. Never thought about it before. One law enforcement job at a time should be enough for any fool.

I always wanted to scream "FBI! Search Warrant!" but something told me to scream my own agency credentials. I think it would be funny at the least.

Couldn't a Fed, in the course of an investigation, role play whatever position he needed to discharge his duties?

I've been "threatened" with complaints by folks who thought I worked for a neighboring department. I've always encouraged them to go for it.

But what about the other way around? I think the Feds would get mad.

I do too. I think that statement is true, but not the converse.

Honestly, though, what's the worst that would happen if you yelled FBI? Could they fire you or prosecute you? I think the admin might chew you out at worst.

I know what you mean.

The reason behing my question is that I often encounter people who don't wanna open the door cuz they don't wanna be subjected to a compliance search. They figure we'll move on to another target. I think that wearing FBI raid jackets and screaming FBI would convince some of them to open the door.

That would most likely come under the federal statute of impersonating a federal officer; state/local LEO or not, IF they wanted to make an issue of it.

I've arrested a few moron's for trying to pass themselves off as LE. Some were prison guards, some security guards or bondsmen. Didn't feel the least bit sorry for any of them, what they were doing was wrong. One of the highlights of my career was a high speed pursuit of a feeb that I got to snatch out of the car. Showed me a badge and was real suprised when I explaned you could get them at a dime store, wheres your credentials. After that I got a lot of respect from feebs. Never could figure it out, was it something I said?

I used to work at a courthouse where a feeb tried to fight his speeding ticket and lost. It was a very humbling experience for him. My experience with feebs is less than positive. The nicest Fed I've ever talked to was an ATF agent. Go figue.
