I have some brass that is pretty dirty and I want to deprime them before I clean/tumble. I just got a Lee universal decapping die today, but looking for way to mount it to a press.

Currently have a 550B so I could get an extra tool head and use the Dillon as a single stage decapping press. Or I could buy an additional single stage press or hand press for depriming. Saw 3 new Lee presses at the local gun shop today for under $45 each.

$23 for Lee hand press, $26 for Lee bench mounted press, and $44 for the Breech Lock Challenger press.

I hadn't looked at RCBS since the shop only stocks Lee equipment.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

I would go with a cheap single stage.

You'll need that single-stage over time. For decapping it won't much matter, but I'd go bench-mounted.

For now, take out the die in station 1 of whatever toolhead you have on the 550 and replace with the Lee decapper. Enjoy that silky-smooth Dillon action as you decap to your heart's content. :)

Hi,

I use a Lee classic cast single stage with their decapping die for decapping work. It is really an efficient piece of equipment. Once you adjust the throw distance for the shell you are working with, you can deprime very quickly without much effort.

Good luck,

I say, buy a new toolhead. Then use your 550 as a progressive single stage, Just run it with 1 die but run the brass through all the stations. Why remove the brass by hand when station four will do that for you.

Why mess with dirty brass..............just give it to me for disposal (prefer 40 s&w).
