View Full Version : Ejection trajectory?

Question:

How does the powder type and load relate to the trajectory of the brass when it ejects? For example, when loading 45 ACP, 8.3gr of AA #5 causes the brass to fly high at 3:00, while 4.8gr of 700-X causes it to fly low at 4:30.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about how the charge effects the trajectory, but the grip sure does. My wife and I shoot the exact same rounds in the same gun, and her brass hits her in the head or goes down her shirt. When I shoot the brass flies about six feet to the right and slightly behind the line of fire. She spent a day working on her grip and now her brass lands on top of mine. (That sounds dirty for some reason)

Slide speed.

Heya,

Just to clarify this some more they were shot from the same gun during the same session. I even loaded the first 6 as the 700-X rounds and the next 7 as the AA #5 rounds with the same results. Is it a higher or lower charge that causes the brass to eject at 3:00 vs 4:30?

Yes, what happens is the different charges changes your slide velocity. This changes the position of the brass relative to your slide during ejection. From what I've seen, a lower slide velocity will toss them towards 1-2 oclock in my 1911. A higher velocity will toss them from 4 to 5.

Slide speed.

Bullet momentum (which is essentially proportional to slide speed).

Bullet momentum (which is essentially proportional to slide speed).

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the 700-X more than likely has a higher velocity than the AA #5 with the powder charges that I used?

Just take the bullet weight times the velocity. That will be your bullet momentum. The higher the bullet momentum, the higher the slide velocity.

Slide speed? Is that why my 10 mm brass flies into the next county?

Glock said that the G31 has the highest slide speed and my Sig brass only goes across the road. I find some of the Sig brass.

If I shoot 125 gr. bullets in the 10mm, will all the 10mm and 357 Sig brass land in the same pile?

I find the ejection trajectory depends on how/what angle she's holding my........oh snap, wrong topic
