What do you guys use for a brass catcher? At my range, if you're shooting 45 or 223, there is always someone waiting for it to hit the ground. You almost have to fight for it back.
Pictures and details would be great.

look at your avatar....
see that thing your arm is around?
i use something like that as a brass catcher........well mine is aged a bit, but thats ok, she is trained already.
on a serious note....5 gallon pail, window screen and some pvc pipe. make it so it will all collapse down. be sure to "fan" the arms of pvc out and then use the screen to go between to catch everything
here is some quick links

Yeah, getting her to go shooting is hard enough. Shes not a bad shot though.
Thanks for those links. That should help.

Those wouldn't bother me on a bench rifle, but I don't think I could stand one on a pistol.

I don't know where, but I have seen something for a pistol that looks like one of those nets that they catch fish out of the tanks at the pet store with. It was a little bigger than those nets, but the few that used it said it worked well. You could probably make your own.
just found something similar on Midway's site: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=112864 It says it is not available, but it probably is elswhere, I am just too lazy to look.

I usually put a big tarp on the ground just to the right of where I am shooting. Most if not all of my brass lands on the tarp.

Hi,
I usually scour the range the minute I get there for all the brass just lying around.
Then, I shoot a batch of 5 or 10 and chase them. Shoot-chase-shoot-chase-shoot-chase...
I can't believe people will steal your brass right in front of you, that takes some balls. I've had someone begin to "sweep" my brass thinking they were tidying up, but never anyone taking it. Usually when people see me picking it up they'll ask me if I want theirs!
Good luck,
Alan

+1 works very well
Also when Im shooting my semi autos from bench or prone I drape a heavy camo clothe over my scope when brass ejects the clothe deflects it down to the table..

The tarp wouldn't work cause my range is busy sometimes and 2-3 people will line up at the 7,15, and 25 yards each. Looking at the end is hard because the ground is lined with gravel/22LR/9mm/steel case. Its almost impossible to find it all. My dads the revolver shooter, he never looses brass...

the pop up foldable car window sun screens are good deflectors that will at least knock the brass down to under your feet. stick them between a couple ammo cans to the front/right of your AR.

The range I belong to has berms on 3 sides of each shooting bay. The bays are 25 yards deep and about 10 yards wide. Know one steals brass while you are in possession of a lane. Leave and its another story. Its also not very busy most of the time. I shot a little a couple of weeks ago and left some of the brass because it melted down into the snow. Went back over the weekend and picked most of it up.
I use a tarp to catch brass. I'm too old and fat to bend over and pick up every piece.

This works quite well for picking up those stray pieces of brass.

Crank a loose round into the ground about where your brass lands every few minutes. Swing your muzzle wildly in between.

I have a telescopic fisherman net that folds in and is easy and leight to carry. I stuck it into a plastic umbrela holder on my side when shooting. I can alter the height (remember, I said telescopic...) for when shooting from the bench or standing.
I realy should have a picture to post ...

I know what your saying ISUSteve out of 100 rounds I got 25 of them back and Im the same way I get more worried about the brass then I do shooting....And I shoot at an indoor range....kinda tuff to chase those 10mm down when they land 3-4 lanes over :yikes:

Get a pair of those things title layers use on their knees. In this way when you're crawling around the floor or ground at the range picking up brass, you're knees won't hurt so much.
:animlol:
I've thought about using one of these, but not sure if it would work:

I just bought a small aquarium net (the type to pick up the fishes when cleaning or other tasks...) about 6 x 8 " and I will see if I can find a way to attach it to my arm (with velcro straps) so it will catch the pistol spend casses !

Well, I just got back from the hardware store and bought some PVC and some net. I'll post a pic if I ever put it together.
One question-How large should the area of the brass catcher be? I was think 2'x2'. That one up top was 2' high x 3' wide. This will be used for a handgun.

With the crazy prices for gasoline I have been thinking about buying a rickshaw. Figuring I can hire an (being politically correct here) "undocumented worker" to pull me around cheaper than I can keep my gas tank full.
Then he pulls me to the range and becomes my "brass catcher". What do you think? Am I on to something?

Hey, so I bended the metalic arm at 90°, went to the range, strpped the device to my arm with 2 velcro strapps and it worked!!
Just need to adapt a larger net to it because the brass tend to rebound and fall out. But in general, the idea seems to work pretty wel.

If I shoot from a bench with my M1a , I use a sun shade for car windshields. An old screen frame tied to the overhead or cinder blocks on the bottom .
When you find the ejection path you only need a small brass catcher close to the gun .

I thought the same thing and bought one a couple months ago. It cost me ~$100 delivered. When it arrived I was very disappointed. The 4 support rods are actually like car antennas. The whole thing seems like something I would have created as a beta model and certainly not something I would sell to others.
The first time I used it was outdoors and it was a little windy, but not bad. It tipped over twice from the tripod it was mounted on and one of the rods broke. I took it all apart and discarded everything except the netting and ammo box. Replaced the 4 "rods" with 3 pieces of 1/2" PVC tubing with the two outside pieces mounted at about 15 degrees to the outside and the center piece mounted about 25 degrees to the rear. It is now very sturdy and a quality product. Also added 5# of weight to the box to deal with breezes.
Will try it out next week. Worse case scenario I may have to add a 4th rod to make the screening rectangular vs. the triangular I have now.
Overall, not recommended.

Glad I never actually bought one. I might try out what you did, take and ammo box some pipe and netting and rig one up myself.

Like I said before I have one also, and yes it does suck. My Idea instead of using a ammo can is using a Scoop Away cat litter bucket, Go up the center of the bucket in back with PVC and make a Tee shape and use Velcro too fasten the net to the PVC. In front either use PVC or using the shaft that are used for safety flags on bicycles.

That was EXACTLY my experience. I was a sucker and paid the nearly $100.00 to have one of these shipped to me.
At first, I was really stoked about this BUBCA. Then I used it. Once. Let me tell you about this thing.
The first thing I did, of course, was to paint over the redneck "BUBCA" that's emblazoned in red letters across the side of the can. Good grief.
I went to the trouble and expense of putting a tripod on my BUBCA. I had to keep cranking the tripod higher and higher to catch the brass. It looked SO ridiculous. The top of the net was like 12 feet in the air. It was finally tall enough, but the brass would still sometimes miss to either side.
The instructions say to poke the wires that are in the top seam of the net through the holes in the tops of the rod supports to hold everything in place. Whatever!! This does NOT hold anything in place. The wires just pull out. I could tell immediately that this was not going to work, so I pulled out the wires and threw them in the trash, and replaced them with stainless rods and alligator clips to hold them together. This solved that particular problem.
To say that the telescoping rods are flimsy and delicate would be a gross understatement. One must be VERY careful not to break them.
I do really like the idea of a brass catcher that will fold down into an ammo can, but this BUBCA needs some major design changes. At the very least, the telescoping rods need to be replaced with something like sectional tent poles that are short enough to fit in the ammo can. This would take care of the flimsy rod problem. Even if this were to happen, I would not try it again becuase it just doesn't catch brass very well. I found myself concentrating on trying to make the brass go into the net instead of paying attention to the target. Then the wind blows it over, and it's time to really get pissed putting it all back together. In order for a net brass catcher to work, you really need to be able to set the catcher on a bench, and hold your gun very close to the same position for each shot.
So for now it's back to Old Reliable for me - the tarp.

These DO work. I used one once with a 1911.
I suspect that the one for the AR works as well, but already have one of these:

This net works fine, and keeps the brass from hitting the other shooters when shooting rifle matches.
