I just got e-mail from one of my buds who picked up a G23 RTF2 for me I traded an old rifle for. I'm gonna see it for the first time soon as I get home.

I figured, somebody oughta be shootin it, since it ain't me, so I told him pick it up, take it to da range an tell me about it. He been a Glock junkie since the G17's that came in in the mid 80's, so I figure he'd be good as anyone an had the time since he ain't workin.

Bein a bud an all, he hooked me up a lil bit, dropped a 3.5 lb connector in it and hit da range. It's a Scherer connector, cause evidently Glock ain't sellin factory 3.5's any more :dunno:

He had it installed by TR Graham who was at da Ft Worth show last weekend, and give it a good once over.

So, range time report says the Scherer connector is crap, and da G23 is nowhere close to as nice an smooth as versions of the past.

I figure it's gonna have some wear in time, being new an all to 'feel' right. He run ~ 800 rnds or so thru it (my ammo) and said all went bang, but it felt rough compared to his 1st, 2nd or 3rd Gen guns he took along with him.

So, now I done swapped for a nice hella cool RTF 2 and it stacks up all ta hell, feels gritty from the git go and in all feels like someone needs to do a lil cleanin up and polish some surfaces somewhere.

Says the trigger bar is different, the frame is a little different internally. Swapped out plunger springs, swapped out barrels, swapped out mags, swapped out mag catch and extractors, still rough as hell. He was gonna swap trigger bars but didn't have time or the inclination to get that far into it on the line.

Says all went bang, but it feels like it needs a zillion rounds thru it to loosen up and smooth out a little.

Any of you got a line on an OEM 3.5 ?

Any of you used a Scherer 3.5 ? If so, does it suck too ?

Anyone running a G23 RTF ? Was it kinda rough when ya got it ?

Now, to be 100% fair, he says accuracy is excellent, pretty good even with the crap ammo he took (Armscorp factory 180). I had the ammo forever, got pissed off at it a couple years ago and refused to shoot it cause the brass is crap. I ain't been home enough to pull the bullets, so I figured he might as well burn the crap to get rid of it.

I told him just leave the brass layin for the range bucket, which oughta tell ya how bad it was.

He ran some of his HAP 180's thru it and says it was simply very damn good all the way puttin em where they were intended.

Said the grip was great.

I never had to break a Glock in and don't expect I will enjoy it when I get home. This is gonna be a BUG, so it's gotta be right, so, I ain't got a choice.

How long did it take you to get your latest Glock runnin smooth as glass and just feel silky nice ?

Slick, I don't think I'd spend too much time fretting over it. At last count, Glock was getting trigger bars (all stamped) from 3 different vendors. I've re-done a heap of 'em and I can tell you there is a ton of difference between some. When you put them under magnification, some are fairly smooth along the edges where the cuts were made by stamping and some have gaping ridges and holes. In addition, the "birds-head" (that goes under the connector) are inconsistent, some with a noticeably different radius which affects pull.

Then, there's the connector. I've used some Scherer's and they're OK but I prefer Lone Wolf's, seems a little more crisp. Regardless of brand, it's mated surface with the "birds-head" of the trigger bar just seems to jive better sometimes this or that trigger bar and this or that connector.

I'm betting that a little re-work here and there will slick things up considerably. If all else fails after it's slicked up try a new, polished up trigger bar mated to a different brand 3.5 connector maybe, the LW or a Glockworx. As you know, Glocks are simple and thankfully, can be tuned up 'bout any way you want it.

You can do it right out of the box. I use the little Cratex abrasives followed by Flitz to buff smooth the following parts:

Triggerbar:

Flat that faces the connector
"Birds-head" top radius
Riser that contacts the FP safety
Sear front edge that contacts FP leg*

Firing Pin Safety: Polish the "dome" of the FP Safety

Connector: If the connector is factory polished its probably fine but I put a gloss on 'em anyway.

Firing Pin: Polish the flat front of the Firing Pin where it rides the "sear" of the trigger bar.

*The leading edge of the triggerbar's "sear" that contacts the bottom, forward leg of the firing pin is critical. It is not straight but has a slight bevel that should be maintained. I use a 5X lighted magnifier to do this one. This should be smoothed evenly and consistently with a minimum of material removed, too much and the triggerbar/sear engagement surface may be insufficient and the gun can double on you. Not hard at all to do right, just go slow.

Yeah... I know... but....

I was hopin to be able to skip all that stuff and be happy right outta the box. I ain't discouraged, just disappointed.

I tell ya, I been runnin my Gen 2's so long I forgot all about the fact they are incredible sweet.

I'll put the connector and trigger bar on a wheel and give em a buff to see if that gets things headed in the right direction, if not, I'll start with the musical chairs swap out until I find one combination better than others. Maybe put a little bore paste on the contact point and go thru a can or two of 155's

Any truth to the comment OEM 3.5 connectors aren't available as an aftermarket item any more ?

Thanks for the update DM ;)

It'll make life a little easier when I get to doing this.

I haven't worked on a G23 in so long I was gonna hafta dig up some of that. I know you'd think, all the contact surfaces, but sometimes I'm weak minded and it helps to have the list.

Thank you sir.

Trade in that piece of plastic and buy a real gun, like a Colt.
