My old target backdrop has had it, beyond salvage, FUBAR. No longer have access to free pallet slats either. I been ciphering on making one out of 1" PVC pipe. Any of ya got one, got ideas, got plans, etc for one? Or am I barking up da wrong tree?

Making them out of PVC is easy. A person with your skills don't need to ask us how to do it:rofl:
Try two metal fence post from the general store. Run'ya a few pieces of twine 'tween them and tape your targets up.

THIS (http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/build-a-simple-portable-pvc-target-stand/) and THIS (http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu24.htm) should get you on your way. I suspect you can use your imagination to customize the general idea any which way you want. My gun club is geared toward smallbore silhouette and the only frames kept out are 100 yarders for big bore so, I have to take my own for shorter ranges. I have one of the TUFFSTEEL (http://www.targetstands.com/) frames...good stuff but, can be made for a lot less.

Two words: corrugated plastic.
Looks just like cardboard, but made of plastic.
I know you've seen em, all the get rich quick signs at almost every intersection in every city in the US.
Lot of em are house for rent, vote for this politician, all kinda stuff. Some come with a little wire mounting frame to push in the dirt to keep em upright.
You can buy the sheets only from a company called Coroplast, or one of their distributors for hella cheap, like $1.50 each. Spend $20 and you'll never hafta worry about a target again.
They're rain proof, sunlight doesn't eat em up, and a bullet won't tear em up like regular cardboard or paper. One piece will take 2-3 cases easy. Just use a thumb tack or tape to mount your targets, rock and roll till da cows come home.
I figured I' buy enough to last for some shooting, so I bought like 15 or so. I still got 12 of em in the wrap and that was 3-4 years ago. Only reason I used 3 is I forgot one at the range and one flew out the back of my shootin buds pickup.
I say piece together some PVC for a frame, slap on some corrugated plastic and you'll be fixed.
Mostly permanent, cheap, zero maintenance or hassle and easy to work with, light weight too ;)
Otherwise, if ya just happen to know anyone that works on conveyor belts, snag ya a piece of an old one and cut to size. One piece will likely last you to the next coming. Thumb tacks are tough to push in, but when ya do, it doesn't hurt the belt at all.

I know I "find" those annoying political sign all the time. They make a great target stand. You just staple your target to it and stick it in the ground. Plus you feel good about it depending on whose name is on the sign.

Another vote for political signs. Just be careful of who's name is on that sign and where you shoot it. Otherwise you'll have well-dressed men in black Suburbans outside your house.

JJB:
When Creo and I had access to an old buddy's range, I made some PVC target holders that I thought were great! The downside was the fact we were shooting with crazy people and inexperienced people...which turned my great experiment into broken PVC! :-/
Good shooters should have no problem keeping these working for years to come. I took two 2" PVC pipes about 7 feet long, then cut the bottoms of each pipe at an angle to drive into the sand/dirt (like those old beach fishing spikes we'd surf fish with to hold our rod handles). Then I measured each pipe from the top, down the pipe the same size as the old trial exhibit boards I use for targets (foam board 40" x 30"). I took my skillsaw and cut a groove down each pipe about 1" wide that I could slide the targets into.
When we got to the range, I took one of the pipes and drove it into the sand until it was stable (probably about 12-16"). then I slipped one side of the target edge into the pipe. The bottom edge stops where the groove cut stopped, so it didn't need a bottom "crossbar." I then took the other pipe and just held it up to the free target edge for a guesstimate of where it needed to be driven into the sand, then went ahead and placed it secure. The cool thing was that all the replacement target boards could then be lifted up out of the top without removing the poles from the ground, and you could even "flex" the poles outward to remove the target boards that way too, since there was no top or bottom crossbar to make it too stiff.
When we were done, you could yank them out and store them in a very small space in the corner of the shed until next time! They were awesome...but like I said...bullets do a number on PVC eventually. :-(
Hope that helps....it was very, very CRB.

I take a pair of 24" 2x4s, give or take, and lay them on each other and bore a pair of holes through them kinda toward the ends. Then I run long bolts with wingnuts through them. On the bottom of one of the 2x4s I nail a board on each of the two ends. At this point it looks like an "H" when you look down at it. Then I place a pair of the cheap 1x boards from Lowe's and insert between the pair of 2x4s and cinch them down with the wingnuts. I place the 1x's the width of a pizza box apart from each other and then staple a pizza box as a backboard followed by whatever target I'm wanting to shoot.
They're cheap and simple to make and the bases will last a very, very long time. And the best part are the thin upright boards. If they catch too many rounds you are only a wingnut twist away from a fast successful repair.

I like the two rods of rebar ( 3/8 / 1/2" ) , with cardboard slide over frames .
It has folded edges on the LONG EDGES of the frame , maybe 1" X 1.5 " I.D. hole . With about a 2' X 4' vertical cardboard frame , fits in most cars
No plastic or wood splinters around the target .Holds up great in the wind .

political signs. They will be sprouting all along the roadside pretty quick. Like slick says the little wire stands are good.
