Anybody putting in serious range time in this triple-digit heat? Jeez-Louise, if it ain't the wind & rain it's 100 degrees plus. I got a bunch of rimfire stuff to try out and having trouble macho'in up to get to it. Don't know 'bout the rest of you but shootin' when this hot is tough enough on me but bench shootin' for precision is just pure brutal. Gittin' old ain't for sissies I guess....

Shooting in the heat will wear ya down, so I usually work at the bench when it's hot
If I don't have any shade, I just load, or clean, or run the smoker until later in the day.
No use in cookin your brains out and making something you enjoy so much a drag

One day last week a friend and I went shooting between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. under the hot, hot Georgia sun. It flat put a whooping on both of us.
And I loaned my range to two guys at work the other day and they were gone within two hours. They were sweating so badly that they were coving their mags in forehead sweat as they loaded them. But them two are kinda sissified.

Serious shooting? Negatory. Besides being too hot, if ya stay still for too long, the gnats will carry yer arse off.

Same here: No way I'll go shooting when the heat index is in the upper 90s or even into the triple digits like it was today. I hope to spend some quality time in the comparatively cool basement doing some reloading -- or just sitting and reading -- tomorrow. Mowing the yard can wait. Shooting can wait. Being outside for pretty much anything can wait. If I do anything outside the basement, I might install one of the two window A/Cs that the previous owner left us for cooling the third floor bedrooms. One of those rooms is pretty small and so should cool quickly as a "lifeboat" room if this heatwave continues.

Yesterday was hot and humid with some rain overnight. Today is supposed to be the same with USPSA match setup and staff shoot today and match tomorrow. I would like to skip out but I'm committed since a couple of regulars won't be there. I"m still hobbling around a little too. I may just setup and not shoot today and just RO tomorrow.

We shot 4 rounds of skeet/trap out early this morning and it was still 90'ish in the shade. Its a bit warmer now at 101degrees (107 heat index). Will probably try to get an hour of range time tomorrow at my local indoor range for some pistol practice.

Can I get my 200+ rounds back??????
I shot a match today and sucked. The heat was tuff on us old timers. I got cranky and wanted a nap, cold drink, and some shade.....
We were waiting on another squad for almost an hour. They took their sweet time. We jumped in and helped. I got a little testy when they were sitting in the shade and we were doing the taping and scoring, so we could shoot and get out of there. I went and handed the clip board to one of their squademates and let them know that we would be sitting in the shade waiting for them to finish. They got mad. I told them to F&*( OFF.
Man the heat makes people do terrible things......

Well, my "want to" got the best of my better sense today. Did my morning walk, grabbed a shower & loaded up & off to the range...almost an hour drive. I had hoped things would smile on me and maybe the group-killin' breeze would gimme' a break since the heat & humidity's unbearable but no such luck. Shot a few groups at 50 yards & 25 with the rimfires but seemed the breeze would catch one out of every group. Between the sweat in the eyes & heat mirage, didn't take long before I'd had enough fun. A couple of nice guys saw my truck and came down to the range to say hello, had a real nice visit and found both were rimfire fans and both had some custom 1022 builds.
One of 'em lived beside the gun club and I asked him was there such a thing as a calm day down there. He sez' there something in the topography that makes it nearly always breezy but according to the windmill in his yard, shuts down about 5PM most days. I don't know if I can bring myself to leave goin' shooting at 3:30 or 4PM but as JJB says, "I'm ciphering on it".

Summertime shooting hereabouts isn't cool, but most days aren't humid--and there are nearly zero bugs of any kind. I try to get out to the range (20 minute drive) at 6 A.M. and get done by 9 A.M.--or alternately, land at 4:30 P.M. and finish up as the sun slides behind the Sierras. All ya gotta do is stay hydrated--meaning one liter of WATER per hour minimum--and no soft drinks, coffee, or beer while out in the heat.
I really feel sorry for you folks in humid country this time of year.

Weather was great here. We got a much needed rain last night and the cool front today. 80 and sunny with a nice breeze. Burned up about 300 rnds at the GSSF match in St Paul. Didn't set the world on fire, but shot better than my last match. A nice meal, coupla cold ones this evening and I'm a happy Ol' Norwegian.

I gotta say we got lucky today. We did hit 80ish later this afternoon, There was a steady breeze that trashed the groups, but made the humidity a non issue - but the long ranges had a lake about 1/2 way down, as did the parking lot.
I rang the 300yd Gong with a WASR 10/63. once I got the artillery range set it was almost easy. The FAL was too easy @ 300. The 500 yard one was a challenge both are Iron sites. I gotta say it it wasn't for the gents spotting it would not have been as fun as it was.
223 @ 300 yds the splash is too small to see consistantly :(
Remington target/Eley 22 ammo smells like burning plastic.
Tennis balls are even more fun than golfballs
308 does nasty things to a bowling pin, spectacular!, but nasty :)
500 yd range is very nice, even if it is a 3 hour drive.

You ain't kiddin'! Tannerite's the bomb! :roflmao: Seriously though, It has been our new July 4th tradition for the last three years to ignite some serious Tannerite power. Biggest we have done was a 12 load if that makes sense. I am pretty sure they could measure it on the Richter scale!
As for shooting in the hot weather, I fired a whopping 13 rnds through my LCP today in the scorching 70 degree temps. I had forgotten how un-fun an LCP really is to shoot!

Shooting in the heat? That's about all I know....unless it's indoor.
A while back me and BoltNut were practicing a lot for a pheasant hunt. We'd get all geared up and go out in 90+ heat. Man that was pretty rough!!!
What I should have done was stick my hands in ice until numb and then practice.
Shooting in the heat really does take a toll on you.

Six pounds sounds about right. I am not the one who does the mixing. I wasn't kidding about the richter scale! We have had people on the phone over 5 miles away hear it loud and clear. They did tell me they bought 20 pounds this year for the 4th. Imagine that in one shot!:woot_jump:

Way to hot to do any shooting round these parts... Had a Digital Thermometer in the sun yesterday and it read 112.5 degrees.... In the shade it was 104.7 degrees.

It was stank hot here today, so I made sure I shot from noon to 5 so I could feel it go up the last 5 degrees to 100....... July only had 4 days that it wasn't over 90 and I can't remember them.
It has been so long since I've been shooting that I even enjoyed the trip-
Got the scope tuned in on the 77/44, finally, months after buying them both.
The skateboard tape stuff on the glocks kept them from noodling out of my sweaty paws.
(I won't do it again any time soon though....)

We have a decent indoor range locally, 2 rooms with 5-lanes each. It is A/C however, the exhaust vents make it hot in summer, cold in winter. Other than horrible lighting (especially, at 25 yards), it still beats fighting the brutal heat we're having. 105/106 the last couple of days with heat index between 115 & 120...this old boy can't fight that and call it fun.

It does make the rifle rounds get hot on the pressure though.

we have a brand new indoor range here blowers blow into each lane to help keep gun powder fumes from hanging around. the air from the blowers is from the a/c units and is vented to the out side so our range is a cool 70 degrees everytime ive been.
bad part is its a 6 lane range and it gets too crowded. i try to go during the week late in the evenings cause the weekends usually have a wait list. and the next closest ranges are about 45 min to an hour away.

Yeah, I have. 90 to 100 degrees can be punishing - Especially when you're older and have a heart condition like I do. Lately, I've been carrying a folding chair with me. I'll shoot for awhile and, then, sit down.
I'm keeping everything at and inside 25 yard pistol shooting range. No more long walks to the 100 and 200 yard targets. Some days can be miserable. I usually wrap my head in a wet bandanna and wear a ball cap with an extended bill on top of the bandanna.
Best times to shoot are before 10 in the morning and after 5 in the afternoon. (EDT) I carry a lot of ammo and water with me, nowadays, too. I'd shoot indoors, now, if I could afford it; but, the only indoor range that's close by is priced for the NYC tourists; and, there's no way I'd spend that kind 'a money on anything else besides ammunition.
Must be nice to be, both, rich AND cool; but, yeah, lately it's been miserable hot! :D
