Ok, so I bought a new, unissued, never fired Mosin Nagant. It is gorgeous! I will post pics of it tomorrow when my wife digs out the camera.
Reloading for it is going to be interesting to say the least.

You be way ahead ferreting out the best surplus ammo deal you can find and layin' it in. Like now. Then, if you want, reloading would be somewhat admirable. Most don't find the need to shoot too many rounds per session... M44?

Yup a sterling example of an M44. built in 1944 with nary a speck on it. Brand spanking new...I am almost tempted not to shoot it, and just keep it nice and clean in the safe to break out in 30-40 years.

It's already been 30-40 years! Shoot that thing. So how do you like recoil? You like recoil don't you?
I assume you're a big strapping lad that likes recoil right?

How is that odd? Perfectly normal caliber. Not at all worth reloading for right now with surplus prices versus brass prices. You won't be shooting more than 20 rounds per range trip anyway, buy a couple of cases of surplus and you will be set for a while. Never heard of one that has never been fired before though, I've hear of ones that were cleaned up at the arsenal and then sent to storage. Good score with the all matching numbers, most of the common ones I have seen are all mismatched.

I shoot lots of surplus, however, handloads can really ring out the accuracy in some of these old military guns.

I agree with that 100%, like I said, just cheaper to shoot surplus for now, collect as much boxer brass as you can in the meantime and worry about reloading for it later. If it has never been fired before than it has a pristine barrel/throat and should shoot surplus quite adequately. I have a Polish and a Russian. The Russian is a little shot out and the Polish is a little better. The Polish (with bayonet extended) shoots as well as my buddy's M1 shot for me. It was within what I consider acceptable accuracy for my abilities with open sights...of course everyones mileage will vary here. I say pick up a case of surplus, shoot it and then make your decision.

Be patient, you'll find brass layin' around. I've picked up about 30-40 at the shootzen place by Albuquerque and have the dies on my midway wishlist. Just waitin' to get more. My M44 kicked like a crack head resisting treatment. Still fun though.

Nice looking rifle! Shoot it, please! It wants you to. Try it at dusk to impress the ladies with your big fireball. :coolgleamA:
I heard that the most consistent groupings with the M44s is with the bayo extended. I'm not sure if it's an urban legend, but I'd be interested to hear what the groups are with the bayo folded vs. extended.
I just checked out AIM for ammo. Damn, the prices on surplus have doubled since I stocked up! They currently have 5 flavors. I've shot the Czech and Hungarian light ball, and both are decently accurate in my 91/30 and M39. The Czech showed some stick extraction in my M39. I'd suggest that you also pick up a couple boxes of the Prvi or Wolf Gold since they are brass-cased and boxer primed.

Damn that's purty.
I wouldn't shoot it.
But then I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

What did ya pay for it, fifty, seventy-five bucks? Buy you a whole heep a milsurp and start shooting that thing til it's dripping grease all over. I have a 91/30 cuz I like long barrels but have put my fair share of rounds through BIGGUNGOBOOM's M44 and M38. Don't let that steel buttplate trick you, they really don't kick bad at all. :)
Most all of em look nice and brand new, even after the couple of million of rounds that have actually been through it. It really doesn't matter in the end cuz the BOOM you get from it makes it all worth it regardless of how it shoots.

I have total about a dozen various Mosin-Nagant rifles and carbines. They are capable of very good accuracy, even with military ammo. The LPS ball (150 grain bullet)in my experience shoots the best. You can reload for it, but at this time surplus ammo is more cost-effective. Sierra Match-King bullets for the 303 British work the best. I use Lapua brass and C-H dies to load this cartridge.
Be careful-before you know it you will have a C&R license, a subscription to Shotgun News, and that Hot wife of yours will be complaining about needing a second gunsafe!:fal:

My wife (hotty hot hot) really does not mind the proliferation of firearms. She encouranges it along with common sense preparation. Heck, she was prodding me to buy a safe here earlier this week. Need to do that soon.
The weapon is in great shape. Should be a hoot to shoot!

Man, if that's an arsenal refinish it's one of the best I've ever seen. You're right, it looks pristine! Hard to imagine in 1944 that any new rifle was held back from the front lines but hell, not ever soldier citizen was on the Eastern Front.
Very nice find!
