So while my 1911 race gun is out getting some more custom work done i thought, "I really need another 1911" but heres my prob, which one? I have several in mind and im looking for feed back on PROS,CONS whatever
hopefully theres people out there that have some of these
(1) Taurus PT1911. seems to be a good gun, has had many good reviews, price is nice for all the goddies you get, you can get a laser grip on one for 700.00 out the door.
(2) buy an older colt off a fellow i know and fix it up. not sure if i really want to fix up another gun, more work, but could be fun
(3) Springfield 1911, I have had a couple. nice finish, strong gun, usually good prices.
(4) Kimber tactical. I thought that i would never, ever consider another Kimber. But im learning to forgive and forget. I know several guys that have kimbers. seem a little high on the price scale, but I have heard that they are worth it now.
so let me know what you guys think. I am usually a big pusher for Taurus but am considering others.
Let me know what you have found and what works.

Don't over look Springfield or the new Fusion Firearms. Dan Wesson has the commander bobtail in .45 or 10mm.
I have a Kimber Pro Carry and a Rock Island Armory .45. Love both of them. Very reliable, very good shooters.
Is this a range piece, home defense, truck gun, carry piece? That will give us an idea of your needs.

As stated a number of times, I like my PT1911. I don't have experience with any of the others you've listed.

Really depends on how much you're wanting to spend. I've read alot of good stuff about the Taurus, and as far as quality goes, they've improved alot.
You're holding value with the Colt, Springer, and Kimber; but if you never look at selling the new piece it really doesn't matter. I'd go with what runs. I've had lemons in Colt and Kimber.

I've only heard 2 things about Kimber, "Its the best gun I have." and "That POS won't feed anything and Kimber won't do a damn thing about it."
I'd take the old Colt.
I have a Springfield GI 45 to go along with my Garand. It works great and is extremely accurate. I gave $425 for it and it works better than the 1911's I've seen at the range.

this will mainly be a carry gun and range gun. I have had bad luck with kimber before and after dealing with their tech support and them giveing no help to fix it at all I swore i would never by another Kimber. my BIL "renof250" swears that their was notning good said about theTaurus on GP, Or the other crappy place. but i have yet to find anything. the colt is older, and has been modified for pin shooting, would need some work but i dont want to have to tinker with a gun that would be my carry. springfields are nice, i have had a few some gave me problems and some didnt. But its hard to beat the price of that Taurus with the crimson laser grip.
I would love a dan wesson but most of them that i see are EXPENSIVE
thanks for all the input and coming input...ill post pics of my race 1911 when it comes back

I've owned a lot of Colt 1911's and loved all of them except the Series 80's model. For a carry gun I'd look at either a Springfield or a Para LDA. One of the best carry guns I've ever used was a Colt Commander LW. Had a Series 70 Commander set up for carry stolen from me. Maybe I'll get lucj and see it again but after 15 years doubt it.

I got my eye on a Colt 70s model. Hoping it doesn't sell this weekend. If not I'll make a little lower offer.

Get the Taurus, you're a Taurus fanboy plus it's cheaper so you don't have to worry as much about the wife getting it in the divorce. Also, I like a 1911 that rattles when you shake it cuz then you don't have to worry about it jamming up as much. Remember that 1911 of Freddie's, thing sounds like a rattlesnake when you shake it but hasn't had a jam in, oh, 60 years.
Personally, if I was going to spend any real money on a 1911 it would be for a Springfield V16 Longslide cuz it's setup for .45Super from the factory, and that's how I roll.

If it rattles accuracy is sure to suck. My Kimber is quite tight and will eat whatever you feed it. I cannot remember it ever jamming outside of an ammo failure.
I thought you rolled with the .45 GAP. :yikes:

Try not to be blinded by grips -stainless - night sights . A good barrel to slide fit / nice trigger is 90%, skip the ambidextrous safety - front cocking serrations - super sized mag well.
Some build a gun out of the cheapy Springfield , pay as you go gun . Most end up with a than better average match gun depending how far you go.

depends, tight works sometimes and loose does always, now how loose? have bullseye guns set up for 1.5" at 50 yds that i wouldn't trust as a carry gun as they require sorta sloppy wet lube to do that in the rapid fire stages but have no shake/rattle/roll
i find i have less tap rack bang drills with some looseness except for the final lockup [depends on how the bushing is setup] - this means you can take the gun and drop in mud and still have it shoot after shaking it off - bullseye guns won't do that
to me loose within reason means better reliability for certain uses

:ow::sniper:
Reliability has nothing to do with how tight a gun is. I have a couple of real tight 1911's that are 100% reliable with all ammo types. It's about tolerances, geometry, and barrel timing.
I have seen loose rattling 1911's jam because they were not built correctly or something is out of spec. These things are manufactured by a couple dozen vendors. Each has their own "idea" what the part should look like. Sometimes their ideas fail.

Consider Smith 1911 PD? I have a Commander size that I like really well. Not bullseye accurate (about 3" at 25 yards), but is light, carries well and has been reliable with all types of ammo.
If you go with Taurus, try out several prior to buy. I found some with lockup issues and bought the only one of many that was tight. Took another 4 hours to refit and tune up to be resonable. The magwell will not accept some magazines. It is near bullseye accurate. Repeatable 1.25" groups at 25 yards. Hope mine is not the exception to the rule.

What's a "PT1911"?

04-12-2008, 11:44 PM
I have a Para LTC. IT is a single stack commander length 1911. I really like it. I am more accurate and consistent with it than any other gun I have ever owned. It has pretty tight tolerances, but I have never had any FTF/FTE with the gun. I run both the factory mags and Wilson Combat 8 rounders in it without a problem.

I picked up my first 1911, a Kimber Tactical TLE II.. What are some options and accessories I should consider. This is my first 1911 and since I'm most familiar with the Walther P99's mag release I'm thinking an ambidextrous mag release would be a good start. How easy is one to install.

I would agree, my Kimber is quite tight and it has never FTF. As a matter of fact it eats some reloads I made with no problem that Biggungoboom had fail in an RI 1911, a Kimber, and Montegods P220. My G30 eats them fine as well.

Nobody cares what a weapon will do at the range, under fluorescent lights and a nice, tight roof, with the temperature at a nice, cool sixty-nine degrees, because nothing that happens at a range really matters, with the exception of practice.
What matters is what happens when you're ambushed in the dark, hit once before you know it, and with adrenaline and pain surging through your veins, you blow the draw. You fall to your knees and search frantically through the mud puddle/snow drift/sand/filth/whatever until you find your weapon, and pull it out dripping with goo, point it at the bad guy(s) and pull the trigger.
At that point, tight certainly does matter-- I want a 1911 that rattles, and will work.
Going back to that nice, bright range, though, all the 1911s that malfunction regularly are the super tight Baers, the Wilsons, and the Kimbers.
No one notices the milspecs, because, well, there's nothing to notice.

For 700 you can get a good Colt, Springer or a S&W. I would look at warranty as the big part before I choose. S&W has a good warranty but external extractor. Don't know about the others. I would pass on the Taurus. Far to many issues. Even I guy I shot with this weekend had issues with his gun.
