I have to stop and give thanks to one of my buds. I've told everyone I know back home to stay on the lookout for a Marlin .41 Mag.

It appears we never see em available anywhere because half the planet thinks .41 Mag is an oddball caliber and ammo costs way too much, so there isn't a whole lot of interest.

Folks in the know realize how sweet of a caliber the .41 Mag truly is and when they acquire one, no way they will part with it for anything close to a reasonable price.

It's been 3-4 years now, searching all over the place and still to this moment I have never held one in my hands.

Well, that's gonna change

I just got e-mail from one of my buds, he ran across one in pristine shape and snagged it for me $449 OTD.

I'm going to hook him up with a brisket and a bucket of ww's for his trouble. We have been friends about 25 years now, so I know how he is when lookin at a gun... nitpickin as hell and a shrewd negotiator.

I'll shoot with him, and eat with him, but I won't deal with him across the table because he talks me out of my socks every time I do. He's given me a lot of stuff gratis over the years too, but, he knows my weaknesses and at times has put stuff under my nose I didn't need to have under my nose.

I can only imagine the 30 minutes of him peckin away at whatever dealer he found it from at the gunshow.

I don't know if the $449 is a good deal or not, but I haven't seen one priced in that range on the net since I've been lookin. :dunno:

It's been a good day

It's a Model 1894 FG with a peep sight on the rear. He says the bore is perfect and there isn't a mark on it anywhere. Looks like it has been fired, very little, if at all.

Looks like this with no rear leaf sight, just the peep :

That is an AWESOME price on that gun Slick, nice score!

I am in a relatively firm "no new calibers" mode, but if I came across a '94 in .41 mag that would be out the window in a heartbeat.

Very nice! I have wanted one for years. Now that the only .41 I own is my model 58, the desire is cooling.

But, its not gone away.

I don't know if the $449 is a good deal or not,

The only opinion that counts is yours.

I bet you are twice as impatient to come home as you were yesterday.

More than you know.

I got a lotta stuff to get done at home, it's cooling off, so it's shooting time ;)

Plus, I gotta wolf down a couple of briskets just to get my system chemistry right again.

I already have some .41 mag 215's cast for use in the wheelie, so I'm ready to go.

That's the main reason I've been wanting one, to shoot cast with, I'm already geared up and got a few orphans looking for a place to go.

Having a wheelie and a lever gun in the same caliber, where you don't have to chase brass from either is seriously convenient.

Now, all I gotta do is find a nice one in .32 Mag and get my 500 if the builder ever gets it ready to ship, and I'm done ;)

I've been asked if I'm gonna scope it.... uhhh.... no :blackdog:

Found out some more info, the peep sights are XS Ghost Rings

Not too shabby

'Slick - I've got that XS ghost ring set up on my Marlin 1894C levergun and like it a bunch. After a while it becomes very instinctive. I also have an XS scout rail on that gun and use the scout scope with QD rings for accuracy testing. The two work together quite well. The ghost comes with two different size rings.

I didn't realize that until I got to looking at them. I e-mailed XS (they're in Ft. Worth) and they sent me another peep and a t-shirt - freebie.

Can't wait to try it out.

Good to know you like the sights, I'm hoping it's in as good shape as my bud claims. He says it looks perfect, so I imagine it is - until I get my hands on it anyway ;)

That is a SCREAMIN' deal on a scarce-as-hell example, Slick. Good on ya, and that buddy of yours did you right.

If the XS Sights don't work out, look at Skinner Sights for the Marlin leverguns. That will be the route I'm going with the 94CCL in 32-20 WCF I'm currently messing around with. I can work a buckhorn sight right well, but the apertures are working better and better as I get older.

The only potential drawback I can see with the XS sights is the rear is held on by one screw (forward screw in the rear pair). The sight mounts with a rear 'post' in the rear most hole, and a screw in the forward hole of the rear pair.

XS ships the sights with a tube of threadlocker of some sort and I haven't read any accounts of it shooting loose, so I'm hoping it will work.

If not, I will definitely pick up a set from skinner.

I've looked at several scout scope mount setups and they do look cool, but, for my use (close range < 50 yds in the brush) I'm going to stay with the open aperture.

I figure a hog won't know the difference if he's DRT from a scoped rifle or not ;)

A LOT of rounds fired through my Marlin .357 and no loose sight. I used blue threadlocker.

Another plug for Skinner Sights. I have 'em on the Marlin guide gun and they work quite well and have been trouble free.
