Currently, I am using Bullseye in .38 Special, Unique and Blue Dot (depending on mood) in .357 and .44 Magnums with hard cast lead. My question is are there any other powders out there that would work as well if not better than these powders in these calibers with hard cast?

Medium to slower powders work better and are more lead friendly than fast powders. WSF is good, 2400, Blue Dot, Accurate #7 or #9 (last three are all about the same burn rate).

Silhouette, it's improved WSF.

Freak is right. Use the BE up & don;t buy more. Unqiue, WSF for med. vel. & BlueDot, AA#7 for higher end vel. In the magnums, 2400 works veryt well.

Thanks guys. It's good to know that I'm in the ballpark for most of the three. I guess that I'll use up the BE and go to Unique for 38 (though I might try WSF)

Winchester 231 for 38 (231 was engineered FOR .38 special)

H110 for the magnums

I thought 231 was designed for .45 (being the successor to 230)?

Hey Jayhawker, I'm bringing up this old post because I am doing some searching. You might want to know that I am considering Bullseye for my 38 Special because I use Unique now, and at lower charges it leaves a lot of unburnt powder. I have been told that it will get better at close to +p loads, but I don't want that much kick at the range. I'm hoping a light load of Bullseye will give me a soft recoil and burn clean. I'm not sure how hot you load, but it's food for thought.

There is another thread where they are talking about light .38 loads, but my wife's favorite right now is 158 gr. lswc, 3.1 gr. Bullseye, and CCI Small pistol primers. It burns clean, as in no granules or flakes left, but is a little on the sooty side.

I just loaded some exactly like your to try on Friday after work. I wonder how close this will be to the Unique loads I have already tried.
