Today I made a trade for a Remington 700 short action with a .473 diameter bolt face. It is an older action but has been trued and the bolt face squared and lugs lapped. I guess I'm gonna have to break down and build that 260 Remington after all. It will be a long time project as the money trickles in.

I'm always curious with trades for odd things-
SO what did you trade away for it?

An Olympic AR15. I got a little boot as well.

Nice base to work with
If I was to be working a little short action project, I'd have to give a Rem .260 a real hard look myself.
Sit tight, I'm about to know way more than I ever wanted to about stocks and barrel contours. Might save you some hassle down the road

Well being a 6.5x55 fan, I can't knock the 260 Remington.

In a modern action, there ain't a meaningful difference in them. I have a Swedish Mauser I sporterised, so I want to make sure I don't hot rod it. I'm looking at a #6 Shilen barrel in stainless select and trying to find a take off synthetic varmint stock. HS Precision makes 'em and they are a good stock.

Oh, for bench work, HS does make some great options.
I see varmint stock take offs from time to time, running in the $100 range
Shilen barrel are hard to beat for the bucks. Good folks all the way around

One of my Canada hunting friends has a short-action 700-based rifle he had built up in 260 Rem. Light-taper 24" barrel, and that critter shoots into the .5s with a number of bullets.

I ordered a Shilen barrel from Brownells yesterday. 6.5mm 1/8 twist. Got their stainless select match barrel.

You're gonna love it
If you have a few hours to spend talking about guns, down to some of the most minute details, call Shilen and ask how to properly break in a barrel
You'll be glad you did, if you like to listen... a LOT

I have talked to Gary a few times. I have 3 guns now with their barrels.
