What is this "line" around this brass? It looks like a "groove" that is between the cannelure and the mouth of the case.
Has anyone seen this before? Do you think that it is safe to load and shoot?

If I had to guess I would say the they were originally cannelured for something like a 240gr and then re-cannelured for a lighter bullet. Do you know thw origin of the brass??? What weight it was "originally" loaded with.
What does the inside of the case look like??
Resize it and run an expander in it, it may iron out the groove

No. I got this brass as part of a trade.

The inside has a raised ring that looks exactly like the raised ring for the original cannelure.
Resize it and run an expander in it, it may iron out the groove
What is an expander? Also, are there any cannelure tools that produce a solid ring? The only ones I've seen produce the "dashed" ring like the factory cannelure.
Thanks, ANeat!

Yeah, I'm betting Adam is right. That may have been there to prevent set-back of a smaller bullet to keep from wasting brass. By the look of it I'd say it isn't a factory groove but something a handloader put there since it doesn't match the factory canelure.
This is a great opportunity for you to put a third ring around the casing and trade it to someone else....

You know, the die that goes into the brass to flare it so you can load a bullet.
I might not drop a max load in them but I would sure shoot them

I have a bunch of 38 special brass just like that. It loads and shoots just fine.
It is an additional crimp applied to ammo to hold the bullet more securely in the case.

I was told those extra cannelures were added to help identify different loads.

They only put those lines on the very worst brass.

Knowing about the canales doesn’t make you a geek, heck my mother said as soon as I move out of her basement I would find a girlfriend. I hear kissing is fun.
