I got a bag of maybe 400 or so .38 Special Remington brass freebie today.

Fella getting rid of it said he was afraid to load it anymore as he has loaded it maybe 20 times.

He was going to chunk it, so I took it.

I'm thinking since it's .38 Special it oughta have maybe another 40+ loadings left on it.

The brass looks OK to me from a cursory inspection

What do you guys think ?

I say if the primers don't fall out of the pockets, it's good to go.

Hi,

I've never loaded cases that many times, but 38 special pressures are very low and as long as the primers stay put, the brass looks good, and the loads are reasonable, should be good to go!!

Good luck,

Alan

That's kind of my thoughts too.

I don't ever remember wearing out a primer pocket on one, and maybe 5-6 splits over I don't know how many years

This is the real reason the 38 is so special - 60 reloads and the bonus that the brass doesn't get flung everywhere.

Them danged ol' nickle cases gonna let go an' split on you after 50 or so.

Sshhhh....

Don't let the secret out. The other reason the 38 is so special is that it is under-appreciated, and dem ol' S&W wheelies in this caliber are ignored by the majority of the unwashed masses.

I'd hate to see what appreciated prices looked like.

I been hoardin' 'em. Retirement assets. :blackdog:

Yeah. I guess they've been appreciated a bit lately. :whistling1:

So much for reverse psychology.

Fire them in that Redhawk Slick. You could stuff 'em full of anfo and probably still be ok.

Doesn't seem to be in my Lyman. Based on BD's video, I'd say start a couple grains less that 16kg and work up from there you know...just to make sure you don't get any leading in the bore.

I'll try to get some chrono data too :animlol:

I think it was G&A several years back tried to wear out .38 Spl brass.....
Started w/100 pcs & found out it was gonna take a BUNCH of loading to do it, I remember the test sample being reduced to 10 pcs. or so, the 1st pc crapped out at 96 or 97 loadings, the longest lasting case made it to about 108.
Headstamps wern't real readable, but it worked fine.

I've never loaded a case 100 times, but I'm feeling better about the 20 times on these ;)

Good to know Uncle Albert. I'm guessing the 45ACP would come in second to that. Can't think of another caliber where you can get THAT much use out of the cases.

That's a good thing since brass for that caliber isn't as common.

9mm, plus they breed in the brass bucket.

I have some 9mm that I have been loading since 1989. Can't read the headstamps. Get the occasional one that won't hold the primers any more.

I threw a bunch of cruddy looking 38spcl range pickups in the recycle bucket, ya'll got me thinking about digging them back out.

My only attrition in .45 ACP is because I lose them. I have a few with headstamp dates of '42-'44 ! And 60's production get shot all the time.
I pick up all .45's EXCEPT A-Merc !
