Seems everytime I'm reloading on my 550b, I have quite a few spent primers hit the floor vs into the spent primer cup. Normally I wouldn't care to much but I still have one grandchild crawling around who loves to pick up everything and put it in his mouth. I thought I read a thread (can't find it now) where someone modified his press by putting a plastic tube around the catcher chute.....am I correct and if so, what size tubing? If not something like this, any idea?
:(

I get a couple primers per hundred that miss the cup. I saw someone make a chute with blue masking tape once. They claimed it caught every one. It was just too ghetto for me. I'd rather vacuum them up.

Adjust the little aluminum lip above the cup by bending it up just a little.

Spent primers on the floor? That's easy to fix: Just make sure the end of the plastic tube they all drop down through is inside a box and didn't move outside it. Do this and 100% of them will be in the box.
Oh, wait, this simplicity requires a LnL and you have a 550b. Sorry, you're on your own to hunt down those wayward spent primers.

Oh, could this possibly be a slam dunk on the color "blue"? I think I'll take 4W recommendation and bend it just a bit.

Get rid of that blue plated sissy press and get yourself a Loadmaster.

Shame on you my misguided friend........one day you'll see the light. :yikes:

Well, that would indeed solve the "spent primers on the floor" problem. If you can't load anything, you won't have any spent primers to worry about losing.

I apologize for this comment. Looking back on it, I don't think it would come across with the level of humor that was intended. Sorry, Steve.

Shame on me! How bout shame on craig. Everyone knows the LM is "the finest reloader made."

Ever since I've been watching and interacting on this forum and GT, the red & blue thing comes up all the time (in good humor). However, I really do equate it to talking about Chevy's & Ford's.......Both Lee and Dillon are great presses.........it's just as fate would have it, the Dillon is better.....

Oh yes, both types can make good ammo and the red and blue wars can be fun. Especially so for those of us crimson folks (Hornady) that can watch the color bashing knowing that we have the best of both worlds. :cheers2:

Crimson presses SUCK!
Yup, you're right. They suck cases, primers, powder, and bullets and, in return, hand back lots of nice completed rounds.

It sounds like the aluminum cotter pin that the spent primer catcher pivots on is bent. Yank out the cotter pin,
replace it with a small safety pin. OPen it, push the pointy end through all the holes, and snap it closed. this provides a hardened steel axle for the catcher to pivot on.

That sounds like a sound/logical fix...........Thanks :)

I have been trying to figure a way to install vinyl tubing on the 550 so far with no luck. 650 is no problem. There are about 3 or 4 different ways of doing that. What Mogollon said helps a lot. Each time you fill the primer magazine empy the spent primer catcher. Even then you well still have spent primers on the floor. One of the many reasons why I like the 650 better.

I'll figure something out........you know the old saying "there's always a way to skin a cat". You would however think with all the eng's hanging around this forum, someone would have thought/developed some simple fix. That little "rug rat", house ape, curtain climber" of a grandson can find just about anything on the floor that's not for comsuption (not to mention my 3 year old golden retreiver ABBY)!

Murph, can you post a picture of the bottom of your 550? Mine has a kind of clam shell on it that holds the primer until the ram gets back to the bottom and releases the spent primer just a few inches above the cup. If you don't have that then maybe your primers are being released much higher and increases the chance of the primer missing the cup.

Yep, mines the same (clam shell) would be a good description. I think in my case, the carter pin was getting stuck and then on the down swing the spent primers were releasing. I just bent it a bit and all seems well now. However from some of the inputs, seems like everone experiences a few dropped ones all the time.....just the design. I'm still going to look into some plastic tubing which you well know comes in all kind of sizes. Just like my little LED Light for looking into station 2 brass, I'll find a fix for this as well. If I do, I'll h ave to start putting PHD in front of my name.

Hmm I haven't had any drop yet.....could Dillon maybe changed something on the newer presses?

Dunno. Mogo's minions worked on my priming system when I sent it in for a refurb and it works fine.

This is what Mogollon wrote on Glock Talk about that problem. When I had a 550 I used a paper clip, and I know people that have used nails. What you want is something that is round and hard.
