I only have 2 bolt guns. The first bolt gun is a Enfield 2A ishapore chambered in 308. I had it parkarized and refinished the furniture with tunge oil. I put one too many coats on and it went a little glossy. I figured it would wear off but has not yet.
I get very good accuracy out of this weapon. I have gotten as small as 2 Moa groups with open sights.

The second Bolt rifle is a Remington 700P. I have it mounted in a AICS 1.5 stock. If you do not know AICS stands for Accuracy International Chassis System. I can often shoot .5 MOA with this weapon. However since I started realoading my 308 it has opened up to about 1 moa. Mostly it is string up and down so I think I need to get better control of my powder.

Thanks... top to bottom: SC550 in .505 Gibbs; SC550 in .416Rigby; SC550 in .300H&H; and a CZ550FS in 9.3x62M. I think I'd like to add a 6.5x55 as well, probably in an FS, and a .375H&H should pretty much do it.

Can't beat the CZ's for the money

As long as they are a push, they are manageable. It's the snappy kickers you gotta watch out for.

Weight makes a big difference. The .505G and the .300H&H are both nearly 10 lbs (plus the Gibbs has a merc reducer in it).

Stance is also a huge factor. I rarely shoot off the bench; I prefer standing shots. Held correctly, even something that has heavy recoil is very manageable.

Plus, they are just plain fun.

I think the two FRBs of .375 H&H brass I have are the most beautiful thing in the world.

My collection isn't really exotic when you think about it. All based on Mauser 98 actions, and all calibers that would have been common at one time. That time just happens to start around 1911. It's really a collection of modern rifles based on a classic action, in classic calibers.

It does make reloading more satisfying. I *know* I'm doing a good thing reloading a Gibbs cartridge for $2.00 instead of paying $20.00 for a new loaded Norma cartridge

.375H&H is one of the all time great cartridges. If I could only have one rifle, I think that might be it. Great range of loading possibilities and performance...

If you like medium bores, you might look into the 9.3 class. I prefer the short ones (9.3x62M) for a few reasons: I like bolts, and I don't like rimmed cartridges all that much. The neat thing about 9.3x62M is that you can easily form the brass from el cheap .30-06. Just run it through a FL die, trim to length, chamfer, deburr, and load up. The only downside is the more limited availability of loads for it, but since you cast you should be able to find molds that do light (225 or 232 grain), medium (250) and heavier bullets (286, 300 even). I've been looking forward to trying out some Trailboss with 250gr lead loads. With reformed .30-06 brass, it get cheap cheap cheap to shoot

Reason I got into .375 H&H is I found a set of RCBS dies NIB with shrink wrap for $7.50 (not a typo; seven dollars and fifty cents). That was my calling. Always admired the cartridge. The .30-'06 of the Dark Continent. I used a .375 H&H Mag in a Sako rifle on deer before. Less damage than a .270 Win.

I've got a hard on for a .350 Rem Mag or a .358 Win somethin' fierce. .358 Norma would be cool too.

If you can find a gunsmith to set you up a "switch barrel" rig, I've got a spare 375H&H barrel and a extra hogback stock, both removed from a 550SM.

P-99 is referring to the fact that I like thumpers also.

I do prefer medium/large bore rifles... they are a blast (no pun intended) to shoot. For me, I'd rather put 20-40 shots down range of something BIG than spray 500 rounds of lead as fast as I can pull the trigger in a small caliber.

Besides, if I ever see Bigfoot, I'm bringing back more than just grainy video :eek6:

Does a can really serve a purpose on a round that starts down range at 4x the speed of sound? Just curious cuz I can't figure it out.

Tailgunner
04-22-2008, 03:27 AM
It suppresses (muffles) the sound, but dosn't silence it. IOW it eliminates a large portion of the powder blast noise, even though it does nothing to the sonic crack.

MONTEGOD7SS
04-22-2008, 11:06 AM
Is it harder to locate where a shot comes from by sonic crack than by having a muzzle blast as well?

gokyo
04-22-2008, 05:45 PM
My understanding is that with a can on a rifle is that if you are down range the noise is still pretty loud. But to the sides and behind the noise is much less.

For you guys that like the BIG rifles...

Here is one that I just completed. Its a 10 shot .50 BMG. It uses a Barrett magazine and it wears a Leupold Mk4 Tactical 10x Mildot.

I've got a bit over 400 in it, minus the scope which I took in on a trade, and it took me 6 months of working on it on and off to get it built.

I havent shot it yet as it is DuraCoated and I want it to completley dry before trying it. I machined an AR-15 lower and added a mag release to the front. The magwell is tig welded to the tube and the bolt rides on Teflon bearings. The bolt itself is a 3 lug arrangement that mimics the Holmes design and has a 60 degree throw.

The recoil pad removes so that the bolt can be removed and it is a Magnum Limbsaver. The carrying handle flips up and down and clears the scope when in the up position. Since the thing weighs 25 pounds, it was a good idea to make it as there is no comfortable way to carry it.

Anyhow,here's a few pics..

Here is a picture of my "slip, shoot and boogy" gun.

Another that I built. It sports a Shilen match grade barrel, has been totally blueprinted and placed in an HD Presicion stock. The can is a Form 1 that I built awhile back.

Whats it for?
For instance if there is a magnum buck standing in your front yard and you are sitting in the living room watching TV, I can whack it, drag it out and you would never know it until you saw the blood trail leading out to the street where I threw into the back of my waiting truck.

Or, if your dogs annoys me and you find him dead out in the middle of the road, looking like he was run over.

These suppressed .300 Whispers are great for many things, like shooting out the tires on the car of an annoying neighbor while they are asleep or shooting holes into the whirly birds on their roof at 2 AM in the morning.

Everyone ought to have at least one.

My CZ 527 Varmint in 204. Nikon Buckmaster 6X18 SF scope. The rifle shoots Sierra's into 1/2 MOA all day long and really tears up the PD's. It's the closest to a laser rifle I will ever own. :57:

These are the other 204's that I own. The first is another CZ 527. This one has a 4.5X14 SF Buckmaster. It also has the Calhoun Single Shot Adapter in place. It was my first 204. The accuracy is in the 1/2 MOA range if I do my part. I'm shooting DANZAC coated 39 grain Sierras at around 3850 out of this one.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj42/GLShooter/CZ%20I/DSC01534.jpg

The second rifle is an SPS 204 Stainless. This one also carries a Nikon Buckmaster 6X18 SF. (You think I like them??:gun_bandana:) Accuracy with handloads is again in the 1/2 MOA area. One thing I found on all 3 of these 204's that they hated the Winchester 34 grain loads and would barely shoot into 1 1/4 inches.

I managed to get the trigger on it down to about 1 1/2 pounds while learning all about the new (alleged) Remington owner adjustable trigger. One thing about the new Remingtons that you need to know on these that if the bolt is not pushed SLIGHTLY forward as you drop the bolt it will fall off. It won't fire but the firing pin will go forward. I thought I had messed this one up with my adjustments till I did some research and bought my stepson a 223 version and was able to duplicate the issue BEFORE I worked his over.

Can you explain a little more about this GL ?

When I got my new SPS 204, with the new Remington X trigger,I was adjusting the trigger. If I just raised the bolt handle and closed it the firing pin would fall off. If I raised the bolt handle and was pushing it slightly , and I mean slightly, forward the firing pin would stay up. (the condition, as you know, is fall off)

I went nuts figuring I had screwed something up. Then I got my stepsons rifle out and it did the same thing!! I then drug out a NIB 223 SPS I had picked up along the way and darn if it didn't do it!!

I'm not an engineer but this I actually read an article in a gun mag that mentioned this issue as part of the design of the new trigger. Why they do it I have no idea.

So that is what I have seen. Maybe I'm special but in this case I have feeling I am not alone.

Does your SPS have the new X Mark Pro trigger on it ?

It did on my 30-06, broke perfectly, just heavy as hell. Evidently there is the 'old' X Mark Pro trigger and this year Remington introduced the 'new' X Mark Pro.

Semi adjustable, three screw, epoxied in. I never took the time to find out if it could really be adjusted to where it was nice, I just swapped it out for a jewell.

But, I got it as a spare now, so if it can be made to let off cleanly and light enough you don't need a crowbar, I might clean it up and use it somewhere else or trade it for something...

SPS's are the bomb.

I'm liking the Husky you got there Heli ;)

I've never owned one, but I've seen a couple at Tulsa. Nice fit and finish all the way around and folks there trip over each other when one is out for sale. I really like the all business look, no frilly crap

Maybe one day I'll own one..... I hope.

Lets try this again. :mf_w00t2:

This is 700 Varminter I got years ago in 243. Changed out the stock to an HS Precsion. It has a Jewel tigger and a Leupold 4.5X14 glass.

This is the second CZ 527 that I bought in 204. The first one shot so well I wanted twins. The scope is a Buck master 6X18 SF. Best load for it is a 39 grain Sierra at about 3750. The rifle shoots like a laser and sure makes the PD's take notice. Or at least notice the one that use to be standing beside them!! :hypno:

This is a 243 BDL I got at Cabelas about three years ago for $300. It is not in the best of shape. I bought it for a donor action for a tube gun project. I got involved in testing a new reloading equipment approach so got it out of the safe. Cleaned the bore, put on a better scope and adjusted the trigger.

I call this my corner gun because I think somebody got it nice and damp and just left it in a corner.

What say you? Should I pull the barrel or go buy another one for the action? :yikes2:

I think I'd take a little oil and super fine steel wool to the ugly spots, slop a little cold blue on it, and call it good!

I agree with you. When I pulled the bolt you could see virtually no wear on the bolt lug bluing. After 110 rounds you could see some wear so I think this one was just shot a tiny bit.

It does very well for a standard weight barrel. I figured it would make an ideal walk around PD rifle.

Most of yall know that I have been doing quite a few custom rifles.
Heres one that I just built. Its a Rem. 700 action that was put on a Knox Comp Stock. The barrel was changed out to the .300 AAC Blackout and threaded for a suppressor.

There is a new outfit in town that started doing the hydro-dipping and the agreed to do this one for free...as a sample to see how it came out.

We dipped the stock, the rifle, the rings and the scope and I think it came out pretty good looking. The rifle handles well, is fairly light and appears to be very accurate so far.

Here is a friend of mine displaying it. The only problem I can see is if you set it on the ground, you might have a hard time finding it.

What do you think? Yes or NO ? I may build some more.

Sweet but you need to do the can also!

We talked about dipping the can, and he decided that he wanted to use it on 3 different guns and it would look dorky if it was the only thing that was cammoed.

I plan to do one with the can dipped.

That particular rifle has generated a lot of intrest, I already have several orders for them.

I've been building a lot of integrally suprressed rifles too. They have a 1 1/4" OD barrel that is 22 inches long and it sounds really good. I am thinking of dipping one just because there are scant few, if any, integally suppressed rifles that have been camo dipped.

Has any one ever seen one? I havent.

Thanks. That pic doesn't show any of the flaws. I'll see how it shoots before worrying about prettying it up. Have you seen it in person yet?

That is nice. Although I do not have wood on my hunting rifle, it does look so much better than fiberglass, plastic etc.

Here's a bolt gun I just aquired. Yeah, I know it dont look like much but this one is special.

Why is it special? It is the "industry standard" for quietness. You see, there is no suppressed rifle that is as quiet as this one.

It meters around 91 when it is dry fired. With a CCI Subsonic in it, it meters at 92...one decible more. Since the human ear can only distinguish 3 decibles, that means that for all practical purposes, its not any louder than dry firing.

The Integrally suppressed savage MK2 from Thompson Machine. Its accurate, quiet and very deadly on critters. Its sort of like "click" and then "plop".
My new favorite gun. Its already accounted for a few crows. Talk about making a crow nervous. They all take off in a hurry whenever they see my truck easing down the road.

Savage mk II! Made in Lakefield Ontario Canada (except for the special bits of course)! A Lakefield mk II was the first gun I ever bought when I was 16. I still have it.
