He was indeed a great American.

I met him back in 1992- when Paul Coverdale was running for the Senate (vs Wyche Fowler, lib-tool ), the two hopscotched across the state for a couple days for brief rallies right before the election.

3 of us picked them up at the airport and brought them into town for the appearance, then took them back. Both were gentlemen, very at ease and appreciative. After a few minutesin the car he said to call him "Chuck", what is friends call him. (I called him Mr Heston, couldn't do the Chuck thing, I was barely in my 30s).

Coverdale won, then won reelection in 1998 before having a stroke in office 2 months before 9/11. The dem gov thought he was so smart in his appointment for the remainder of the term. Turns out he was but not in the way he thought. Democrat former gov Zell Miller turned out to be more conservative than most of the republicans in the state.
(We all remember his republican convention speech on 04 don't we?)
