Ok....I just got a new gun safe at a local Joe's....an AMSEC 5517W. Not the best safe but within my budget and it fits where I have room for it. Please no critique on the safe...you shoulda bought this or you shoulda bought that. I know there are better safes out there but this is what I have for now.

Anyway...for a dehumidifier I'm planning on getting either a 12" Goldenrod or an Eva-Dry 300. Does anyone use either one and why do you prefer it? The safe is roughly 9 cubic feet.

Also, I'd like to add some lighting. I'm thinking about the rope type lighting and I'd like to have a switch that turns on the light when I open the door. What do you use for lighting?

The safe has two precut holes in the back that I'm assuming are for running the wiring for those kinds of uses.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bolt it down securely if you haven't already.

Yes, it is bolted down. Good point. I have friends with safes and they didn't bolt them down. Not a good idea.

I got the remington version of the eva-dry and I have to "recharge" it every week or so. I decided a goldenrod is a better choice and if all goes well, it will ship Monday.

I used one of those "push on" dome lights and installed it in the gun safe.

Just my 2 cents

I just dehumidified the whole room along with the ammo storage and reloading supplies.

I have several smaller safes and ammo strong boxes

40-50% levels are good. I can get down to 30% if needed. Unit is connected to a permanent drain

I personally would not put ANY electrical appliance in my firesafe - I use rechargeable silica canister. And I know where stuff is.

I use Golden-Rods in both my safes (neither fire rated - I know, I know...). They seem to work well and they are easily installed.

Actually, one of my safes is a two-door, so I've got a Golden-Rod for each side.

So how do the Golden Rods work? Do they actually have water that comes dripping out of the safe?

They raise the temp inside the safe - thus driving moisture out. Just can't bring myself to heat my safe.

Forget the Goldenrod & just leave an appropriate length rope light set on. Warms & provides light & you can get them on sale at Menard's, Home Depot or Lowes a LOT cheaper than a goldenrod. Like about 4 or 5 to one !
For your safe, a small 5' or 6' string should be more than enough for both heat & light.
