View Full Version : The furious 10mm.

In the wee hours of the night I loaded 200 rounds of 10mm with 180 gr. plated bullets and 8.9 gr. of Longshot. These are my first 10mm loads and this morning was the second time I've shot 10mm, the first being about eight years ago.

First thing this morning I ran these rounds through my recently acquired Smith Model 1076 and Delta Elite. Both pistols functioned 100%. The recoil in both wasn't as bad as I was expecting, although the Colt did bite the web of my hand. This particular load was quite accurate in the Smith, but the Colt temporarily has an atrocious trigger so I'm not sure about it.

I don't have a chronograph but I did test the performance of the 10mm with a redneck smackdown gauge - quarter-inch steel plates. Factory 9mm (not mine) and .45 acp would do nothing more than take the paint off these plates. The 10mm rounds would put a deep crater in the plates along with a dent.

I spent the rest of the morning shooting .38 Super but switched back to the 10s before leaving the range. The difference was extremely noticeable. After shooting the other calibers I could easily recognize just how robust this round is. The 10mm is a brute of an auto pistol, and I like it.

I don't believe I'll shoot this caliber into the air for fear of killing an angel.

It has a little more power than the 9 and the 40 but it really is a powderpuff when compared to the big revolver rounds.

If you have large hands you will probably like the hogue rubber grips for the 10XX and 45XX. You will have to modify them by filing a groove for the decocker though.

Then you mean all those Gomers packing a G20 on a Kodiak Island bear hunt after reading "Caliber Corner" are undergunned!!??

I have never faced a Kodiak but seems to me that 16 rounds of hot 10mm might be more fire power then 6 rounds of Revolver-recoil-hell-caliber.

Though I defer to anyone who has any real world experience

I agree about those big bore revolvers. But, and I know this will lower my standing around here even more, I just don't care for them. I've tried and tried to appreciate revolvers and I can't make the passion happen. And the big boys strike me as nothing more than a gun novelty - for me - and would be much more entertaining and maybe useful in a brush gun configuration.

There, I said it. I get no genuine satisfaction from revolvers big or small. Outing myself is a mighty hard thing to do, but I feel like the monkey is off my back now.

A true story. One day at a local range I saw a dentist I knew vaguely shooting a behemoth rifle. It was a .375 H&H Mag. I asked him "but I thought you just went on your Kodiak hunt with a Win. 338 Mag.?" He replied "I did." So I asked "what's up with the elephant gun?" He told me sheepishly "I didn't kill a bear but I saw one that another hunter killed and I felt like the sheriff on the boat in the movie "Jaws" who said "we're gonna need a bigger boat!""

I completely agree, with the following reservations

I like my Single Six it is great intro gun for people who have never shot before (in my opinion) and it come in 22 mag (which is a hoot). I also want a Ruger SA 10mm for the sole reason of not having to chase brass when I am shooting 10mm.

I like this line about using the >375 H&H in Africa from Wikipedia

"When hunting dangerous game, a double-rifle or a controlled-feed bolt action rifle is most commonly recommended, as a quick follow-up shot may be necessary, and reliability of the firearm becomes of paramount importance."

As in you hit the Lion in the tail and now it is pissed

It may just be me, but if I felt that I needed 16 rounds of anything to keep a Kodiak off my back...I think that I would get a bigger gun.

I'd probably say something quite similar to what the dentist said. If I was hunting something that could seriously injury or even kill me if it wasn't 100% DRT, I'd want to be carrying an overkill level caliber.

I think that is a good point. I am just not sure how well I will maintain my focus with a small car sized pissed off mammal running me down.

Hate to think I only have 6 chances at it.

You could always save the ammo till he's chewing on you, much easier to hit a stationary target.

Ooh, a bear thread! I've never made a post on one before.

My only thought is, how do you figgure out if your chosen round has enough power to penetrate to the brain or break the spine after penetrating a bunch of hide, muscle and bone?

Would a hot 10mm fmj flat point or even a 44mag do the job?

I've never shot a bear or even seen one in real life.

I remember a long time ago Bob Milek wrote of shooting a black bear in the head and his 357mag hard cast bullets broke up on its skull.

If you need to shoot a bear in self defence you might need your gun in a hurry. Some guns get so big they get slung across the back (long guns) or extra large handguns get carried under a coat in a shoulder holster or similar, while fishing or working.

So, I guess you need something you can wear on your belt and get out quickly that is powerfull enough to stop a bear with a brain or spine shot.

Bear spray has a better history than guns stopping bear charges. The NPS says over 70%.

Just over 70%?!? So almost a third of the people using bear spray are just flavoring the bear's lunch? :dontgetit:

Not all bear charges are lethal. Some are feints & some the people live through.

... & some the people live through.

Well that sure increases my confidence if I ever visit nasty bear country! :hypno: Lets see, maybe I'd feel comfortable carrying a hot-loaded .45-70, a 12 gauge loaded with slugs, a .50BMG (full auto) and wearing a harness connected to a helicopter ready to lift me up at the first sign of an unhappy bear heading my way.

Yup, I'm a wimp when it comes to unhappy animals that can gobble me for a snack - especially if I'm the cause of them being unhappy in the first place. And yup, I'll probably never go on a bear hunt or go up against one of the dangerous five. (Speaking of which, the local Cabelas has a Cape Buffalo among its collection of stuffed animals. I look at that, ponder the comparative size of a .375 H&H or even a .416 Rigby bullet and shake my head.)

I've always enjoyed thread drift because there is no telling where it will go. That said, when I posted this thread I never, ever would have guessed bear attacks. This is hilarious.

"The thread fails and goes off the rails." Huh? I thought the engine jumped the track to squish the bear. A remote controlled steam engine was also on my list (oops, forgot to mention it) of things to have handy in bear country.
