They do tend to draw out the country, Southern an' redneck brothers an' sisters. Someday, I'ma go all crazy an' do 3 or 4 layers an' make my own creamcheese frosting.

NPR said that red velvet cake was originally colored with beets.
Only a good old southern boy would put beets in there cake. If you let them they would top it with beets greens cooked with lemon juice and bacon.

Close. It was some sort of Italian lemon cake/mousse thingy. It was citrus anyway.
