ISUSteve's recent post about taking his wife shooting made me wonder about taking an anti-gunner shooting.
Back when I was in college during a class we got on the topic of guns and this one girl made it very clear she hated guns. Between classes as we were heading to a different building (same major so we had pretty much the same class schedule) I started to ask her is she had ever shot a gun, she hadn't. I offered to take her out shooting to see if it would possibly change her mind. At first she refused because she didn't even want to touch an 'evil gun' but after a little pushing she accepted the offer.
That weekend we headed up to the mountains and we did quite a bit of shooting. At first she was reluctant to pick one up but quickly it was obvious she really enjoyed shooting. A couple days later to my surprise she stopped by my apartment excited to show me.....her new pistol. She had so much fun she went out and bought her own.
So has anyone else taken an anti-gunner out shooting? Hopefully you 'turned' them to the good side.

Most anti-gun people are just like her and learned from her parents that guns were bad. Once they get a chance to shoot one then they realize their parents were hippies and full of ****, and all is good. My wife had a bad experience early in life with a gun and has always said she didn't like them, but lately has been showing interest is going shooting and maybe taking some women-only classes.

introduce one to a .22 rifle or pistol and some tin cans or clay pigeons and they will become hooked............then they will become one of us.
Resistance is futile.

My sister -in-law just asked me to take her to the range the next time she is in town! I told her we'd have a basic safety class before hand and later go the the range, she was very eager.

Yep! And I still be datin' her too! Actually, I never pressured her, she saw that I was pretty morally responsible by all our conversations and such. Then the 1st she came over to my then hut she asked what the safe was for. At first I said "Guitars......and other weapons of mass destruction." Then I showed her. She was shocked but I let her have her opinion and left it alone. After a couple of more weekends together (we live in different towns/cities) she wanted to "observe" while I shot. Again, no pressure from me. Finally! She decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the only hand gun I brought that day was my G-19. One shot and the brass flew inbetween her face and glasses. So she left it alone for awhile, but reeeally like me shootin' my revolvers. So I asked if she'd like to try my Taurus Titanium 357 mag Tracker loaded with 38 Spec.s. Bam! That was it, she was hooked. So's I got her her own Stainless Tauris 357 Tracker, slicked up the action a bit for her and she swears by that revolver! When ever she comes over now, we go shootin', weather permitin' of course.
Things that helped? I basically ran over with her all the safety stuff I knew from common sense, the Golden shootin' rules, and USBP academy stuff. I just recently got her into autos, my Ruger MKII .22. She oves that all to hell now. Also, reloading helped cuz she saw I was "efficiant" ("Cheap Bastard" in my eyes). She helps me reload from time to time too.

I was raised in a family that was pretty much "Only two types of people have guns: cops and criminals," though Dad used to reload, and step-dad had a deer gun.
I work in/study at an Engineering department in a university, and I frequently take Ph.D. students (aka pencil-necked Indian/Chinese ultra nerds) to the range with me. I've had a couple of ~5ft ~100lb girls refuse to fire at first because they thought it would be too loud. They do fine after they are double-up'd on hearing, considering their hands are too small to really get a good grip on the guns.
Mom hates guns. Took her out shooting for my birthday and she had a legitimately good time. Still no desire to own a gun or to ever fire one again, but that's fine.
Boss's 12 year-old daughter hated guns, and was upset at her mother for getting her CCW (WTF?). Boss dragged her out to the range with us one night, fired a few shots and loved it. She's been back twice.
I take a lot of people out shooting with me that's never done it before. I'd guess around 15 new people so far this year. Everyone has enjoyed it.

Ive broken many a hippie and democrate's from the evil shooting gene. havent had the chance to break a liberal gun hating gene yet...... but one day....ohh yes.
My girlfriend is born & bread of hippies. She won't touch my gun, & tries not to even look at it. You can imagine our conversations...
Me: Want to see my gun?
Her: NO! Put that thing away!
Me: Come on... touch it.
Her No!
Me: Just touch it! You'll like it.
Her: I'm not like that.
Me: If you really love me you'll show me...
No dice.
I'm hoping I'll get a chance to take her to a range one day & let her shoot something with good visual feedback. Something that will make the experience fun for her. Too early to tell though.

This is going to sound like I am shallow and a bit of a jerk. But into the breach I go.
Dump her. I had a GF that I really loved. However she pretty much hated and wanted nothing to do with my Hobbies. She Hated guns, motorcycles, sailing, hiking etc. She was not very passive about and over time I did less of those things that i liked and did things she liked more. I was young and stupid.
That realtionship finally ended, thankfully.
Now I am married. My wife is not so much anti- my hobbies she just refuses to participate in them. She does not complain when I spend my money on guns and shooting, or when I go sailing, motorcycling etc. However she does not join me.
This is both good and bad. It gives me a chance to do the things I like and get out of the house. it is also good because i do not have to share space in my safe or garage.
This was great when we first got married becuase it was nice to get out and away. However now that we both work so much and so hard i really do not get to spend as much time together as we did when we where broke students. i really do wish that she would like to come along so I could enjoy my hobby and spend time with her.
And to think that you are going to change you GF likes and dislikes just puts you on a dead end road. You just got to love people for who they are not who you want them to be. Trust me on this.
So Dump her and find some other prettier and smarter women who wants to do the things you like to do.

Took my buddy and his wife out to shoot. He had shot with me before, but his wife had never ever held a gun. She was some what anit-gun. By the end of the day she was bustin caps outta my G19 like it was goin out of style.
I love seeing the first time shooters grin after they fire off the first few.
Gokyo,
I've been with my girl for about 3 years now. She, sounds a lot like your wife actually in the way she acts towards my hobbies. I agree that you can't change someone, but you can introduce them to new things & let them make up their own mind. I've had success in the past this way with my girl. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will go well with the guns. She just doesn't like to try new things right away, so it's going to take some time for her to warm up to the idea before I can actually get her to go to the range with me. Then, I need to focus on making it as fun as possible for her. AFter that, she'll be much more understanding.

I took an anti-gun chick out. She found out that shooting is enjoyable and that not all gun owners are weirdos, but I don't think that I've changed her political stance.

All of us who enjoy and highly value guns and shooting should make it our business to introduce non-shooters to the pastime every chance we get. If every gun owner and shooter did this to one person a year, soon there would be no support for "gun control."

Alright, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this one, but (1) I come from somewhat hippie parents, (2) I go back and forth but voted Democrat in the last election, and (3) would more than likely be considered a liberal by most standards. However, I love my firearms quite dearly, have donated a good chunk of change to the NRA, and have become quite proficient at reloading on my 550B. I'm teaching my retired Dad how to reload 30-06 for his M1 Garand this weekend.
Just remember that the world isn't as black and white as some people would like to believe.

Naw. No flammin' from my end that's certain. I'm viewed as hard core Right wing by most of my Indin friends and relatives, and left by many non-Indin friends. Always seen my self like John Adams, a hard core moderate= balance that I can live with and that's livable. :yesnod:

My wife and I have taken a couple dozen of her teacher buddies out shooting over the past several years, and the rate is increasing as the word gets around that SHOOTING IS FUN. Rather than have them deal with the loud and confusing (to new shooters) environment at a public range, we usually head out to the desert about an hour east of our house--a nice place not trashed by plinkers and over-run with mall ninjas.
With a totally new shooter, it's 22 LR handguns and rifles and my 870 x 410 for clay targets.
At first, anyway.
After they get comfy and start building confidence with the little guns, I drag out a 9mm or 38 centerfire or the bolt 223 (Ruger 77RC). Marie starts up with her P-228, my P-226, or the bolt 223, and her buddies see that she survives in good order, and JUST GOTTA SHOOT THE BIG GUNS. Tell ya what--after a 50 to 100 round warm-up on the rimfires, these newbies do very well with the centerfires. Most are 20-something or 30-something women, BTW. After about an hour, most of the women and all of the men can usually handle my 686 x 4" with duty load equivalents (158 JHPs @ 1250 FPS) with pretty good accuracy.
After these trips, more than half have asked for assistance in purchasing a handgun--often a Glock 9mm, SIG 9mm or 40 S&W, or 357 Mag D/A revo.
I keep the trips free of politics and agendas, it's about having fun.

Today was a good day. My wife and my 4yr old daughter both shot their first gun and liked it. Was up in the mountains at a friend of mine's cabin and we were shooting pine cones and other stuff that attacked us with my .22 rifle. Also got to have two other 7yr old boys shoot it and it was a good time all around. Let the games begin.

I remember datin' this apache girl who was a tacher on the Navajo Rez. We went out once, she shot my P-22, "Okay.....I get it." she sez.
Next was my G-19, "Wow! that was cool!"
Then 357 Tracker with 38 Spec.s "Hmm. I think I like this one."
Then my Kimber 45 ACP, "HOLY ****!?!?!?! I NEED one of these! Now! You! What was your name again? Chewy! Yea. Chewy! You need to take me to the gun store TODAY. I NEED ONE OF THESE NOW!" She was real happy, and shot that 45 better than anything else. Next day we went to Sportsman's Hut in Albq. and she bought a Kimber 45 witha' 4 inch tube.
Then I never saw her again.
