It's been a couple months for me since the last time i went. And it was Gokyo's mail-in target shoot before that. Then probably years before that. So, not much shooting goin' on for me.

I went Tuesday and the Saturday the week before. Kinda pitiful for a guy with his own range.

Going in the morning with some friends.

Twice in the past two weeks. But before that it might have been two months or so without any shooting. I have annual qualification next week so I'll hopefully get fifty rounds each thru as many as eight or so guns....... :)

I have an indoor range about 15 miles away so I personally go shooting a couple times a week. Although I love shooting my AR-15 and Remy 308, their max distance is 100 yards and they only have "3" lanes whereas the pistol range has 22 positions (pretty big outfit). Ever since I got my Remy, I've really been into shooting target rifle vs. my Glock 23 and two Colt 45's (go figure). All in all, you meet some really nice folks at the range and able to share ideas and technical things related to our hobby so I'm very content.

Last Saturday and 2 weeks before that.

Excluding matches its been a few months and that time was pretty brief. I do need to take all my guns out to the range soon and plink, play, and train with them.

Just got back. We started at 10:30 this morning.

I finally got my cast boolits worked out and running great. Very good accuracy and no leading after running a mess of rounds through my Sig Stainless Elite. Y'all know what that means? Goodbye Precision Delta and the $119/k .45 acp bullets price tag!

Four weeks now. First it was crappy weather, now I am on vacation and have been camping. Just in town to wash clothes and re-supply for a few days, then back out on Tuesday. Heading out near the Bow Summit this time. Haven't been for several years:

the last two times...
lets see...

Right before dark today, I put 10 rounds of handloads into one ragged hole with an intergally suppressed .300 Blackout in a Remington 700 that I built.

After church this morning, I put 20 rounds of Remington 220 grain Blackout through the same gun. My reloads were more accurate and much quieter.

Got out about 2 weeks ago to the Sporting Clays range. Before that it was the same thing about a week apart.

When I finished my 12-hr shift this morning I met other officers from my department at the range. I got to qualify/re-certify on a GLOCK 22, GLOCK 34, 1911-A1, and a Mossberg 500 before it got too freakin' hot to continue without food, water and rest!

In a couple weeks I'll be adding a Mossberg 590 and an AR-15 and a BUG or two..

it's been far too long...

went with Creo to test out some rifles on a friends property, and thanks to that endeavor I'm wanting one even worse now!

I'm thinking...Browning X-bolt...thoughts/reviews?

Not sure of the specifics, but Gun Tests magazine gave very high marks to a Browning X-bolt in the past. These boys run their magazine like Consumer Reports.

Browning makes a real nice rifle. I'd be damn proud to own a Browning. Also look into and compare the SAKO/Tikka line for superb rifles as well as Savage and CZs.

Perhaps the best potential "out of the box" accuracy is a Savage but other things come into play as well.

Whichever rifle you chose, try to buy an optic that costs close to the cost of the rifle, or even more if possible. Leupold makes great mounts for practically any rifle.

Real glad to see you signed up here, DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's go again sometime in the next week.

I still have the 340 Weatherby Mag that needs shooting. Wouldn't want to deprive you of the opportunity. :whistling1:

You need to dust off your shotgun one day too! :holiday:

When was the last time you shot that thing???!!! Your bachelor party???!!! :paperbag1:

Anyway, I think I trashed the mag already, but one of my NRA American Rifleman mags covered both the Browning and the Tikka mentioned above. Remind me, and I'll try to give you the articles from their databases to read and compare. I wouldn't think twice on either of them! BTW, the optic comment is VERY true. :hunter:

Tell me about it...! I missed out on going for Bill's going away

Hahaha I don't think it's been thaaaat long, but oddly enough I can't remember a time since then...

Yeah, I've been doing a good amount of research and comparison between the Browning and Tikka - and I'd be glad to hit you up for some more lit. And I've come across that notion regarding the optics during my readings - now I just have to decipher what the different _x_ means, and what would be the best for the type of shooting I want to do, since this rifle thing would be new to me...

Scopes are listed based upon magnification or magnification range x objective lense

The most common ratings you'll see are 3-9x32. This means there's adjustable magnification from 3x to 9x and the objective lense is 32mm in diameter. Objective lense is the side that faces your target.

Some times you'll see a fixed power scope listed like: 10x42. Means you can't adjust the magnification and the objective lense, again is 42mm in diameter.

What do these numbers mean? The more magnification, in theory the further you can see. But there's no free lunch, so as the magnification increases you get limited field of view. You also get less light through the scope so things start to get darker.

Objecive lense size is important because that determines also how much light you get through the scope. The bigger the lense, the more light. The down side is that you have to mount the scope higher to accomodate the size of the lense. This requires higher rings and can mess with your cheek weld and your ability to see through the scope. Also a bigger scope is going to weigh more.

Many people will tell you that you want your scope to be as low as comfortable. I agree with them.

The best thing to do is to get a scope that compliments the rifle, caliber and type of shooting you plan to do.

If you want to do varmit shooting from 400 yards away, get something with a lot of magnification and a big objective lense. 6-24x50. If you want a medium game (deer, hog, etc.) rifle, get something in the 3-9x39 or 3-9x42 range.

There's more to the story, but that's plenty info for now. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks. He'll need to make sure to put a "scout scope" on that rifle. They have a much longer field of view, which is essential because of how far away that scope will be from his eye.

Chuck Hawks has an article and a recommendation here:
http://www.chuckhawks.com/scout_scopes.htm

In that article he'll have to suffer through a bit of Chuck's sentiments on the scout rifle concept, but it's good info.

Thanks for the explanation(s)!
My pleasure!

Oh and recall that great big fixed power 34x (I think) scope that was on the 340 Weatherby Mag? The eye relief was so limited we couldn't even see through it!

That's NOT a rifle I'm willing to put my eye close to that scope. Recoil could give the nastiest of black eyes.

Been reading it's more oomph than a 375 H&H!!
