I took the MIL's Grandmother clock to the jewelers today so it could be cleaned and given the once over. While I was there he pulled two lead bars out of the bottom and gave them to me. He said he didn't know what they were there for but he sure didn't need them. The two lead bars were taped together so you couldn't read anything. When I got home and cut the tape I opened them up and on the bottom it said "Bell System Wiring Solder". Anybody have any idea what this is. Each bar weighs around five pounds and I haven't had a chance to run them through the hardness tester yet.

60% lead/40% tin

apparently ma bell used it for splices in lead jacketed cables (and plumbers use for pipe joints)

Reading the pointer to Castboolits, I wonder if those ingots would have collectable value. Perhaps putting them up on eBay would give you enough cash to buy more than just 10 pounds of lead.

I'm good on lead. I have around 1,600 pounds of WW's. I was wondering if anybody knew what they were so I could figure out how I want to use them without wasting them.

Thanks Cohutt.

I, have a bar of the same stuff, my BIL, gave me. If I, ever start casting I'll add it to my 15 pounds of range find's.

I have around 1,600 pounds of WW's, 50 pounds of Monotype and enough 1/8" 95/5 solder to last a good while. I think I will just hang onto these and not melt them.

I sent this to my brother in law. He retired from ma bell.see if he has any ideas on the worth of it.

So what you're saying is that you are the Cohutt of West Virginia?

Well I did burn my hand a little once while casting. :whistling1:
