:hurray:

Just found out yesterday that I got a slot at the L10 nationals this year.

One of the clubs I shoot at was awarded a slot and they gave it to me.

This is my first major match of any kind.

I have so many questions running through my head and so many things that I need to work on that I am almost freaking out a little.

Any advise?

how much practicing are you doing?

With the rain we're having, pretty much dry fire only.
The match isn't until Sept. Hopefully I'll be able to get in plenty of practice and local matches between now and then.

The thing that I am most concerned with are the things that I won't be able to get much if any experience on beforehand. Like moving targets. We rarely have them at our local matches. I may have to build myself a swinger and clamshell to practice on.

Now that sounds like a good plan.

I'd suggest finding a nice Glock shooter from Ohio and offer to carry his range bag and buy him lunch.

Now you are getting your priorities straight. :cheers2:

I was out there two years ago...for their first match. They had the match hotel downtown. Down the street a bit was a nice place that had a multi-page beer list.

OK...movers...

They all are activated by something...like opening a door...but usually a steel popper is used as the activator. They will show then squad a demonstration of the activator during the stage walk-through. People will ohhh and ahhhh, and comment on how fast or slow the mover seems. Now of that really matters. You don't need to get rushed when you shoot them. What is often overlooked is that the popper is going to take a while to fall once you hit it. You will probably have a good second before the mover is actually activated. No rush. Go for a nice center hit on the popper. For me, after the popper, but before the mover...I'll usually want to shoot another target or two during the second or so that it takes for the mover to activate. You may not want to push your luck there. Just know that their doesn't have to be a big rush. Get good solid hits.

if by chance they have a star there start at the top. first time i ever saw one a few of us were talking about it and they all said start at the bottom is the best way to shoot them. i didn't know they were joking and having fun at my expense. turns out i was the 2nd shooter and the guy in front of me wasn't any better at it than i was so i didn't get to learn from watching him. starting at the bottom is the very worst way to shoot a star.

ede...with friends like that... :ow:

For those that might not know...a (Texas) Star is an appartaus that holds 5 metal plates. The plates are at the ends of 5 arms that have a hub in the middle...kinda like spokes on a wheel. It rotates around the hub.

They are balanced, so that when you shoot one plate (it falls off), it becomes unbalanced and starts to spin.

If you always shoot whatever is the top-most plate, then it won't spin as much.

I found a video of one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ke5uW8jhDjQ&feature=related

(They did have a couple in Tulsa.)

I have shot the Texas Star several times. I've shot it clean, and I've had dismal runs.

I understand what you are saying on the timing issue with the movers. They had several at a club match I went to at USSA in Tulsa. I remember watching a couple of the better shooters on my squad doing exactly like you described. I thought I would play it safe and take a couple of the available targets before I activated it. I ended up standing there for what seemed like an eternity waiting on it.

USSA is only about an hour and a half away from me. I'm planning on making as many of their club matches as possible this year. It will be my best chance to experience the kinds of things we're talking about.

That's not a bad drive at all. My closest club is about an hour...and I have to help run the match. (Well, I suppose I don't HAVE to help...)

Most of the rest are about an hour and forty-five minutes or so. It helps to get a shooting buddy to carpool with.
