I thought that was so 70's. When I read about it, it sure sounds like fun. Think my .375 H&H Encore could slam steel? Wish there was a silhouette shoot nearby I could go check out.

I think it would be fun. We have some steel plates hung by a Chain that we Place at 200Yds. I really like the satisfaction of hearing the steel ring when fired at with a 4" revolver with Iron sights.

Always wanted to try it myself but either I havent heard of any or their arent any matches near me.
I even have a set of the rimfire sized steel swingers I take out to the range from time to time.

I've shot 22 silhouette matches at the club I belong to. They have little steel animals they set out at around 60, 80 and 100 yards. It's a lot of fun and they get a pretty good turn out. They usually have it during an IDPA or Glock style match so there are already a lot of people at the pistol range.

I plan on giving silhouette a try one of these days. Last year a silhouette club from the west side put on a clinic at my local range and they supplied the guns and ammo, it was a lot of fun. I picked up a 10.5" RSB I plan on shooting and have been slowly working on a load for it. Still searching for a hooded front sight for it though, bomar you use to make a front/rear silhouette sight set for the SBH but have since discontinued it. :( In the meantime though if anyone wanted to spot me the cash for a FA silhouette model, I would be glad to jump right into the sport and let you know how it goes.. :)

Yeah, but not chickens and pigs and stuff.
We use various size and shapes, odd distances beginning at 500 yards.
My longest hit so far was on a silhouette sized and shaped like an IDPA target set at 1,100 yards, 15-20 mph cross wind. ( was only two for six).
.308 Winchester, prone with bi-pod.
I shoot at silhouettes. Does that count?

remember, you gotta send at least 40 of them per match. With a .375, I see some OUCH factor at play. Popular calibers seem to be .41's and .44's in revo, and 6.5 and 7 BR's, or other similar wildcats between 6.5 and .30.
Plus, the gun configuration restrictions exclude most encores (TC never cataloged a 10" gun, had to custom order the barrels to make a go, since there's a 10" limit, and a weight restriction too)
Course that was all assuming that you were doing handgun. You want rifle, I like that too. Remmy 700 in a mcmillan stock, set up for 260 as of now, I drift between that and 7-08 every other barrel or so. A leupold 6.5x20 bumped up by premier to 14.5x35 for glass. Good stuff.
But yea...scoring 1's and 0's sure makes for a good time.

I shoot Smallbore Rifle Silhouette at our local club here in central Arkansas. This particular game requires that the 22lr cartridge be used. It is possible to start with a 10/22, but most shooters will move to a bolt action ASAP for the inherent accuracy. The CZs are very popular since they can be had for relatively little money, and most of them are capable of great accuracy with match ammo. Of course, the Federal 550rd brick from Wal Mart will not work very well for this. Match 22lr ammo runs anywhere from $0.10 - $0.15 per round. Expensive for 22lr, but very cheap relative to centerfire!
Most of us who have played this game for any length of time have invested in an Anschutz rifle (Germany). They shoot QUITE well.
One really needs a rifle that will consistently shoot 1 MOA or better. This is because in order to score consistent hits, it is necessary to shoot 2 MOA or better....offhand.
There are 10 chickens at 40 meters, 10 pigs at 60m, 10 turkeys at 77m, and 10 rams at 100m.
One round is fired (standing, offhand) at each animal in 5 shot strings. You are allowed 2:30 (30 seconds per shot).
If the animal falls from the rail, the shot is scored as a hit. It it does not, it is a miss. This way, there is no arguement about whether the point is scored. Steel is really fun to shoot because of the instant feedback you get when the animal rings and falls from the rail.
The top 4 animals in the photo below are the size used for this game. Keep in mind that these animals are at different distances from the shooter, so from the shooter's perspective, they appear to be very close to the same size.

Our club also hosts Highpower Rifle Silhouette matches. This game is almost exactly like Smallbore Rifle Silhouette except that the targets are made of hardened steel, and they are 5 times bigger and 5 times farther away - chickens at 200m, pigs at 300m, turkeys at 385m, and rams at 500m. These are also shot standing offhand.
One must use a centerfire rifle cartridge with a bullet of no less than 6mm diameter. The trick when choosing which cartridge to use for this game is to pick one that will have the power necessary to knock over the 60lb rams at 500 meters (32" across), and at the same time not generate enough recoil to tire you out towards the end of the 40 round match. 308win and 7mm-08 are popular choices.
I also shoot Smallbore Pistol Silhouette. This is fired on the same 100m range as SB Rifle, and the animals are set at the same distances, but they are 2 1/2 times the size of the SB Rifle animals to compensate for the greater difficulty of using the pistol as opposed to the rifle. The 22lr cartridge is required.
All of these Silhouette games are VERY challenging and lots of fun!!

New guy here.
I've shot IHMSA Field Pistol (25, 50, 75, 100 yards, half scale targets) for a few years. I like it. Nice slow pace, good people, makes for a great Saturday once a month.
I've shot it mostly with T/C's in .44 Rem Mag, .357 Mag (light handloads) and .22 WMR. This year I'm going to try it with my Baer .38 Super.
This year we're adding Big Bore, but I'm not interested in that too much.

Welcome to GP FF1063
I used to shoot sillywet, loved the lighter stuff too.
I got into the SuperMag 445 and liked it for the most part, but the lighter stuff is by far the most enjoyable to me.
You can shoot all day for cheap and enjoy every minute of it. Shooting the big bore stuff is fun, but is more work.
