Something I'm getting to like is HEAVY oak smoke! I'll take what ever I'm gonna BBQ and thaw it in my smoker grill with like, 4 pieces of oak wood and leave it there for about 30 min. Then start with the sauces.

That much oak smoke is really overpowering for some but I like flavor that just punches you in the gut.

Just last year, I got a good supply of Pecan. That is some good smoking wood. I am rather partial to it now.

I do visit a friend in GA every year. We butcher a couple of hogs, bbq at least one, and shoot a little. Great time. I'm about due for a trip down there in the next couple of months. I'm running out of pork in my freezer.

I know it's nothing compared to Memphis or anything in Texas, but do any of you all make the trip out here as a team or otherwise to the Best in the West cookoff in Reno? We get a VIP table every year with all the eat and drink and I usually drink more than I eat cuz I paid $80/seat and I'm gonna get my money's worth. There are some pics of myself and BIGGUNGOBOOM at a point in the night that I don't know if either of us actually remember. Good times!

Pitmaster, where are you located?

Iowa here, but have been known to make bbq contests in various other areas.

South Bend, IN. Not a lot of BBQ around here. I checked in to doing some BBQ comps, took a judging class, and checked things out. Decided I wasn't interested in competing. Too much effort in trying to make the sweetest meat. You can't win unless you hit that sweet spot. Me, I like more heat in the rubs and sauces. I prefer my ribs dry, my pulled pork served Eastern North Carolina Style, and my brisket cooked direct Texas style with a tart, hot sauce on the side. I would rather spend 4 hours at IDPA and lose than 24 hours at a BBQ contest and lose.:patriot:

I can see where that would piss you off.

Normally we just drink enough beer that losing doesn't matter.

The last year I helped my folks out at MIM we did win people's choice though. We even got our picture in "Southern Women" magazine. Try googling that one.

Every time you post that it make me wanna sing da National Anthem.

That is as good as it gets, top shelf all da way.

Best of da best, of da best, hands down.

A bonafide piece of American history that jus flat out kicks ass

Peoples Choice of Memphis in May, the world series, hall of fame, all star game in da world of que.

Winnin Grand is nice, but Peoples Choice makes Grand look like a prize in a box of Cracker Jacks

Thats the weekend I drive to Maryland. I'm not sure what Jerry is doing...I havent heard from him since the Genisis of GP. Wish I could take a few hours outta the drive and do some range time too if your gonna be up there. I am thinking about leaving Friday...if you are going to be there Friday night I could wait to leave until noon-ish...that would put me up there around after work time? If it is Tulsa weekend you will be gone? That would seriously blow because thats the last chance I got and if I give i to Jerry that weekend I don't think he is going to take the return items to Maryland.

Memphis in May BBQ cookoff is coming up very soon. I work downtown too, so the smell is going to be absolutely overwhelming. They are already selling MIM MusicFest tickets.

I gotta find someone with a team so I can get free passes to eat and drink beer.

Since I switched to teaching I am now stuck in Iowa during the third weekend of May. Since that is normally finals week, I doubt I'll be able to make it again.

My folks are still there every year- Wizards of Que.

Used to spend a bit of time in the Guard tent too, as my folks retired from the Memphis ANG.

Well, ya know, the last few years I've been the designated "baby sitter" while you guys went. I got passes when I was dating BC but you know where that relationship went.

GETOUTTAHERE!!!!

That's where I spent part of my time the year I divorced (2003) and was dating BC (he was with the SouthPork team)...You know Tracy? You guys won that year for something (either ribs or sauce) if I remember correctly and your double decker booth was the BOMB!!!

It is a small world indeed.

Yep. That was one hell of a party, a lot of work, and full of fairly memorable experiences.

Tracy is my sister.

That was a crazy BBQ fest that year. One night we were down there and the sirens started going off. Tornado Warning...people refused to leave their booths and pork since they'd been cooking it for so long. And the rain...ugh! At least you guys had your OWN portable toilets too and didn't have to wait in line or share with anyone else!

I clearly remember the rain water running through a fan motor and over several electrical connections as I tried to figure out what I was going to do about it.

Good times.
