Recent find during the on-going demolition of the ol barn from hell. I had forgot all about it. Hidden amongst all da junk. That makes me 2 burners.

I sense a mega-smelt in da near future. :yesnod:

Might want to brace it up a tad, Jump up and down on it and see if it flexes.

I've got 4 of them scattered around. I think I want to make one that's pretty stout this summer.

Them are some skinny looking legs so unless you build up some support I say just use that one for frying turkeys and chicken wings. I do like that big ole pot cuz it looks stainless instead of aluminum.

So...how do you brace it up? Especially if you can't weld??

Generally, you can get away with bolted constrution and/or gusset plates in place of welds, although a lot of times you're looking at .375" and better plate with .5-.625" bolts.

If you have the time welding is cheaper.

Cool, I have no idea how to weld nor do I have access to gear. Bolted sounds good to me, thanks.

Just stack up some bricks underneath the wind block and you're good to go. You don't have to make the legs stronger, just give the burner unit something to rest on and the legs don't have much purpose.

Hang it from a tree limb with some log chain. Let it swing in the wind.:biggrinjester:

Hang it from a tree limb with Lee Precision toilet chain. Let it fall on the ground.:biggrinjester:

Fixed it.

The ingot production can't go faster than the guy skimming or pouring. The pouring can't go faster than the burner's ability to heat the lead, The lead can't be produced faster than it can be melted, you can't free up one ingot mould until the last ingots are cooled down enough to dump, you can't get the next 40 pounds melted until the pot is refilled, you can't melt lead faster than it's ability to absorb heat.

There's alot of hurry up and wait in smelting. Alot of burnt forearm hairs for that matter too. Sometimes even if the lead doesn't burn you, the sun will.

Nice JJB, very nice, a few sections of angle iron and you've got a heavy capacity burner. Almost heavy enough to smelt down Koski over! ;-) Anvil, you fogot, JJB and Granny are a team.

You sound like a guy with a few hundred pounds of WW smelted but 4 tons of ww left. getting old yet? :yesnod:

I decided a while back that one dutch oven full per sitting was about all i care to do these days. It works out to be 150-250 lbs and 2-3 hours depending on the stuff that is getting smelted. Sunday eve I finished up the misc soft scrap I had waiting and ended up with 26 more 6 1/4 lb ingots for the wall. I did some other stuff at the same time but stayed handy to stir skim add lead etc.
I remembered that i had an expanded wire fire grate from a 'q pit that i dug out and put on bricks to allow air flow under the ingot molds. I had a fan circulating air underneath and over the molds and they cooled much faster. After i dumped them i hit them with a wet towel to cool them off some too (away from pot yeah, yeah).
These two things sped up the process greatly.
Also it is a whole lot easier on the back since i elevated the ring a little and put the ingot molds on a work bench.
