I was thinking of a contest where contestants try to make the most interesting lead casting. That last one there definitely looks to be a contender.

Thanks; I have an inline booster fan to help draw the smoke/fumes when I flux more than anything. Probably about $40.00 in stuff, The 90 degree fitting actually lets you swivel the whole thing out of the way if necessary.
When Im not using it I stuff a couple shop rags in it to keep the cool air from coming in.

What's so special about lino? (comming from a guy who knows nothing about casting)
cohutt
03-13-2008, 05:12 AM
Linotype is pretty hard, has a good bit of antimony in it. It is a good thing to have on hand if you want to cast harder bullet. Not so much to cast 100% lino bullets (although i have read of people doing it) but instead to add to WW and other alloy to get the bnh you want.
I traded pure lead for it as I needed to build up my stock of harder alloys to blend into all the soft lead i have; all of my cast boolits tend to be softer than ww. Lino is good for this

Since you live in Ohio, that vent is going to pull a lot of cold winter air into your garage. I presume you have a heater to keep the garage at a bearable temperature? If so, what do you have and how well does it work?
AdamN
03-13-2008, 04:11 PM
Yes I have a heated garage, I think its about 70k btu wall furnace (LP) It will keep the garage as warm as you want but thru the cold months I keep it at 55 if Im not there. 65 or so if Im in there doing something.
All my reloading/casting/machining stuff is in the garage. Along with 2 cars:yikes:
Yes it gets a little crowded:driving:

i have a monkey rigged casting bench under construction complete with vent system, lighting and a trap door boolit drop.
not much yet, maybe one day when i have some time i can finish it and get casting again.

Where'd you get that tin and how do you recognize it when you see it?
I got a few old radiators laying around, seems like I heard some of these had some tin in them.

03-14-2008, 09:13 AM
Does anyone still sell tin foil? Would it work too?
AdamN
03-14-2008, 02:38 PM
One trick I use for identifying tin is to bend it, when bent it will creak or "cry" as some call it. Definitly makes a noise when bent. 50/50 tin lead solder will creak a little.
Radiators usually have 50/50 solder at the seams but the majority is brass/copper for the old style.

Got it from a good feller over at castboolits.
ANeat speaks truth on da "creak" identifier.

Little story here, back when I was doing some serious scrounging at the local scrap yards. Seen a buch of ingots like Jawjas tin, Old dirty stuff, looked like it had been around for years. Picked one up and gave it a good bend "creak" it said.:treerat: Head first I went in there, got about 40 pounds of it for .20 a pound:dita::yikes::prrr:

Phoebe: Okay so, by melting, you meant melting.

Phoebe: So is it like art?
Frank: Yeah, you can melt art. Hey, can I use your phone?
Phoebe: Um, yeah sure. Why you wanna call your Mom?
Frank: No, I wanna melt it.
Phoebe: Oh, well um, not right now. Y'know I’m just gonna go to bed,
I think the fumes are giving me a headache.

confession time:
how many here burned themselves in their younger days playing with burning melting pet bottles/ milk jugs?
You know, "zip-zipping", "zipping", "ziff ziff", whatever you and you buds called it, as in light it and listen to the cartoon sounds the burning plastic fireballs make when they drop.
When I walked into the infirmary in college, when i saw the doc guy and showed him my hand he didn't even ask how i did it, he just said "ziffing, were ya? hold the milk jug on a stick next time, stupid." :banghead:
