View Full Version : So What Do You Think.............

ok here's the story...... my girl friend gave me her 10/22 to work on the trigger. so for her birthday i decided to give it a face lift.... got her a heavy fluted Green Mtn. barrel........stock from Richard's Microfit Stocks which i had to sand, fit butt pad, sling swivels, and finish with polyurethane. took the receiver all apart, smoothed all trigger parts, bead blasted receiver and barrel and finished with Dura Coat added a extended mag release, new springs, new scope mounts and rings. so my question is?......do you think that she will like it....i'm posting some pictures but with this camera, just doesn't do it justice...doesn't bring out all of the colors in the laminated stock. so if you have a wife or girlfriend that shoots, please have them look at the photos and give you their opinon.......

Thanks,
Rick

My wife is not really a gun person, but I am sure sjhe would appreciate the color of the barrel and the glossy finish.

the trigger feels clean and crisp. according to my trigger pull gauge it breaks at about 3 3/4lbs. but seems lighter. heres the site i used to smooth the trigger:

thanks for the comments sparky. will be giving it to her on friday. that's our range day together.....

Wow Rick. That's nice.

I've noticed that very crisp triggers "feel" lighter than they are. A buddy of mine has a 1911 that he swears gages right on 3 lbs. But it feels like 1-2 lbs to my (apparently) un trained trigger finger. Crisp as hell, freaky almost.

I shoot a stainless 10-22 with standard barrel and a Butler Creek folder stock. It had a horrible trigger when I got it, but the mere addition of a Volquartsen hammer yielded a really crisp trigger that pulls at about 2.5#, measured with my RCBS Premium TPG.

Hey Walter,
was that a drop in fit with the Volquartsen hammer or did you have to do some stoning on it too?...it's good to be back on a forum with you... you were sorrowly missed at GTR by a few of use ......

Steve,
thanks for the compliment. this was my first time working with Dura Coat and it was pretty easy to do. thinking about doing the frame on my G-23, also i plan to Dura Coat my Win 670. this stuff is pretty easy to use. the secret is bead blasting the piece with 120 grit aluminum oxide and not touching it with bare hands.....

I really like it. I built a custom stock for my 8 year old daughter. When it came time to stain the stock a color she liked she picked purple.

So I think that guns=purple in female psyche and that this color match is evident at a very early age.

The hammer was a drop-in. They also offer a hammer/sear combo, but I was pleased with the results of just installing the hammer, that I didn't opt for the sear replacement. Some of my ol' GT buddies shot my 10-22 in Atlanta last year and seemed to like the trigger.

Thanks Walter for the information. i guess i will go with the drop-in-hammer first, a 2-2 1/2 lb. trigger would be nice to get. haven't shot the rifle yet that will be done tomorrow when i give it to her. sure hope that she will likes it. i have to admit, i'm kinda getting to really like the way it came out. anyway thanks again Walter and to everyone here for the nice words......

Rick - looks really nice. She's a lucky girl to have a guy that thought beyond a polish job and wanted to do something special for her. Top work, there.

As to "will she like it" ... i dunno, really. Laminate stocks aren't my thing, but some people love them. So it's really up to what she likes in a gun... if she's expressed in the past that she liked that sort of stock shape and look, I'd say you're golden!

Either way though, i expect she'll love that you did this for her. :)

Thanks Thorn,
the reason that i went with a laminate stock is because at the last gun show we attended in Ventura Ca. she was eyeing the laminated drop in stocks made by Boyd's and looking at the heavy match/varmint barrels. plus she is a southpaw and there were no left hand stocks only ones Boyds call a Universal stock for both left and right hand shooters. so i figured that i would make hers a little more personal. the laminated stock is a left hand Apache stock made by Richard's Microfit Stock's here in the San Fernando Valley. so i was able to go there in person and hand pick the stock. it is suppose to be a drop-in fit for the action but i still had to do some minor fitting and of course sand everything smooth and install the butt-pad and sling swivels. the sanding was the most time consuming.......

I put the hammer in my old beater, and installed a set screw behind the trigger to remove over travel.. addition of hammer made trigger pull very light.

if she doesn't like it, ditch the gf and keep the gun; it'll be good bait to attract the right minded replacment gf.

Well everyone, she really love's the rifle. guess my next project for her will be her Kimber TLE-RLII. thanks to all for the encouragements. i think i'll keep her cohutt. when i first met her at the range i go to, she owned only one hand gun. now she owns several and 4 rifles and 1 shotgun. i also taught her how to re-load and she has her own equipment now and does her own(.223/.308/.45/) she's really into .45's.

didn't mean to create another project for you, just was trying to get some input from the women folk here to see if they might like it.i'm sure that you wife will appreciate the love and effort that you will be putting into her project. when i build or repair firearms it's like therapy to me. i really enjoy doing it. anyways good luck with your project.

I LOVE MY GUN!!!

WOW, it is gorgeous and feels and shoots so much better now! I had replaced the factory stock a couple of years ago and had a Butler Creek folding stock on it, which looked really good, but was uncomfortable and difficult to shoot in any position. This is a L/H stock that fits me perfectly, and feels so good!!

I cannot believe the job he did on this gun....I am sort of speechless...well no, not really...!!

And now I know why he told me about this site when it went up, had me register, and then told me to "stay on the other one" as there was nothing happening over here yet....and I believed him!! :)

The pictures that were taken although good, do not, in all honesty do this gun justice. The camera does not bring out the colors and the workmanship sufficiently...it is a sure head turner!!

I LOVE YOU RICK FROM CALI....

Thank you....!!!:blush5:

Very cool, Rick...these things are addicting. I just finished tricking one out and I'm already thinking about another...trying to decide what receiver to go with. With all you've done you might want to tweak a little more accuracy out of it by having the bolt re-worked...headspace corrected to .0425, FP is "Pinned" preventing it from rising (flyers), radiused @ hammer contact for smoother cycling and a nice finish put on at the same time. Randy at CPC Bolt Re-Work (http://community-2.webtv.net/RandyAtCPC/CPC1022BoltRework/) has an excellent reputation.
