I'm considering purchasing an m11/9mm. I see that Larry Lasco has one NIB, with the Lage setup that I plan to install for $4950 + tax + shipping.
Should I go with that or a used one for $2900 and wait until my name comes up on the list and then get the Lage setup?
In total there's about an $800 difference and a long wait between the two.
Opinions please!
Btw...this is my first post here!!!

creophus,
I don't own any NFA weapon's but have trained on a few and shot even more, just never felt the need to put that kind of money into one. Now with that said I'll throw out this bone, go with what you want, a used dub gun that's been taken care of will do just as good a job of producing empty brass casings as a new one. Enjoy.

The only caveat i can think of on the M-11/9mm SMG's is that the upper receiver material is not particularly hard material. If the gun has been fired much with weak ammo, or there are ejector problems, the stovepipes out the ejection port will deform the area where cases get trapped. Two employees here have had that problem to one degree or another.
Just suggesting that you examine the metal around the ejection port for deformation before purchasing.
Not aware of this problem with the Lage setups.

It appear to be a normal condition... I have 3 uppers in 2 calibers, and all 3 show som sort of dinging from inside that slightly bow the leading edge out. Mine run fine. My main upper that run suppressed & slowfire has minor bow, along with an older upper that gets run both slow and fast fire.
My 40 S&W upper has a wee bit more ding/bow, but it works fine, none of the forementioned weak ammo/stovepipe stuff here.
New M11 dont really mean much, the frame is the important part, and $2900 is a deal, I paid $2500 back in 2004.
Find the cost of a Max-11 upper today, deduct from the $4950, and see if you at $2900-3200, if so, buy....... if not, buy a plain M11, and buy a Max.
I went TASK style when I bought mine, it was prior to the Max, I had all the parts sitting here waiting for the gun.. when I picked up the gun, I sat down and install the parts for the TASK style. TASK style really only involve a hole in rear plate for an op-rod to pass, a compete AR/M16 stock assembly, and a heavier buffer to get total moving weight up to 28oz.

I'm new to these, but I'll add that the lower is the tax stamp item and the welds should be checked on any mac lower. If you look at all the companies that started & finished the receiver flats there was a wide range of quality. Also, a too aggressive re-weld can damage the receiver from the heat build up.
"Normal" uppers can be replaced fairly cheaply although a re-tuning might be in order for reliability, trimming/ filing ejector rod maybe. Masterpiece Arms down hwy 27 from here in Carrolton GA makes a pretty good upper and a lot of the side-cockers others sell and market are actually a MPA upper with some added features like HK style sights or rails.
The top upper is the original Hatton/Jersey upper, the one on the gun is a MPA.

buy used
i was lucky and never paid more than 1400 [ps m10 with original sionics suppressor] for used macs - it's sheetmetal, parts even now are cheap and if the port area is deformed it can be hammered back into shape
get the gun
then worry about add ons

I went with a NIB version on a form 3. The price has gone up since the first of the year. I thought I'd wait until the price came down, but no such luck! I looked on subguns.com and sturmgewehr.com constantly, so now I'm just searching for mags, lots and lots of mags!

I went new in box with my first M11/Nine, but in retrospect, I'd have no trouble going with a used gun. The lower is the important part and anything can be fixed. I had very good luck with a WTB add on Subguns.com. It cost $5 and saved me several hundred.
You can't go wrong with Lage. The guy makes fantastic stuff and give the best customer service. I personally would get the gun and get on Richard's list. I can't go into more details at this time, but trust me you'll be glad you did!
Best of luck!
Jake
P.S. be sure you get on his .22LR upper list, too.

Richard Lage manufacturers an upper conversion for the m11 and mac-10 that greatly improves its handling and function.
Check out his website for all the info. www.max-11.com
I am just getting into this class 3 stuff myself.
First step is get your $$$ together and decide what you want.
Next decided how you plan to take possesion of it (corporation, trust or individual).
Last, find a weapon and buy it, then the wait begins.

Uzitalk.com's Mac section is one that Richard Lage frequents and posts in regularly. Nice bunch.
