The rig I was using in my last post, I use an internal fire and regulate heat by controlling air intake and a damper on the chimbley. I'm thinking of building another since I can pick up another tank for free. I'd like to use an offset firebox since that'll let me use a higher ratio of wood to charcoal and it'll give me better than half again as much grill space. Can anyone recommend a good source of information on how to go about this?

Cut da one ya got, weld da new tank on one end.

Existing rig = grill / firebox

New tank = smoke chamber

Prolly double ya capacity an functionality

Make sure ya make room for a baffle an a drain ;)

This is mine. It's made from a single propane tank. I simply cut the end off and cut out a piece of 10ga in the shape of an "8" with a hole for the heat/smoke to pass through, then weld everything back together. Picked up a couple of replacement BBQ racks from Home Depot, added some quick legs and handles. The damper can be seen on the bottom of the side chamber to control the heat. It sits just under the grate that I build the fire on so air passes up throught the fire. I have heard not to damper the exhaust as it makes the smoke bitter. On the end of the main chamber where the valve was screwed in, I now have a thermometer screwed in so I can keep a watch on the temperature without opening the lid while smoking.
