Anyone load for the 45-70 govt? I recently bought a 1894c in .357, and I'm already eyeballing the 45-70 govt model. Anyone have any expierence with this platform? If so how do ya like it, how does it shoot, how's the reloading process? thanks in advance.

1895 Guide Gun. 47gr IMR4198 with a 350gr Hornady FNSP. Get some Oregon Trail 405gr LFNs. 12.5gr TrailBoss is a great subsonic plinker.
Stick with Starline brass, Winchester is good too. Starline=nuclear (+40K cup), Winchester=hot (32.5K+ cup), everything else for plinkers (28K cup and less).
I've had loads tested by Hodgdon that ran to 70,000 CUP on their equipment and the report said "they simply fell out of the chamber".

Hey freak thats the exact model I was looking at. How is the recoil on that gun with a hot load? And what kinda accuracy do you get?

With nuclear loads, I can make the barrel lift off the benchrest over a foot. Get a Sims Vibe Lab recoil pad. Trust me.
My gun shoots MOA out to 250y with iron sights (XS ghost rings).
Note: Those feet are my son's and yes the gun was triple checked to make sure it was unloaded. My son LOVES guns and loves to check them out when I have them out. I do not hide guns from him.

I used to have a .45-70 HiWall. Reloader-7 is THE powder for this cartrige. I got 2550 FPS with 350gr slugs from dat 28" barrel. Kicked like a mule, though.

I have the marlin with the 22 inch barrel, love it. my fav loads are 38.0 grns of 3031 toped with a oregon trail 405. and 12.0 grns of trailboss with the same bullet.
I think mine set me back about 500.00 or so. I use starline and winchester brass.
great gun. planning ontakeing some hogs with it later this year, along with the ol 454 cassul

15gr of Unique under a 405gr "Lead Volley Ball" will make a nice soft Plinker as well.
Very Cool Gun. I have other loads that I have ran but I dont recall off the top my Head.
Go Ahead and buy one,it will ruin you as Bad as Owning a .41Mag

Cohutt loads that load, a lot. Very nice load, didn't kick me too bad. If'n I had a .45-70, I probably load that too.

45-70 makes a wonderful vartmint cartridge! 28 grains of I-4198 behind a 405 grain lead bullet is a blackpowder equivalent load; very comfortable and quite accurate. For hunting I use the Hornady 350 grain RN and a bunch of I-3031. Makes for a one-shot drop on and elk at about 175 yards our of my Browning 1886 carbine.

I don't think I want to run into any of the "varmints" that Mogollon is shooting at with a 405 grain cannonball.

Take head shots.
Oregon Trail and Hornady is what I shoot the most. I get them from Graf's. For mean nasty critters, get Belt Mountain Punch solid. They will pole axe anything in the world. They are pricey, but hot damn those are awesome. I got a handful in a trade and tested them out. 395gr solid at 2000fps from the Guide Gun is so addictive it should be a narcotic.
Primers for plinkers are CCI or Win LRs. The serious loads only get Federal LR Magnum Match.
Get a copy of Handloader August 2007. Very nice 1895-45/70 load article. Everything you ever wanted to know.

This here is my favorite. 535gr FNGC at 1700fps.

The load is 54gr Varget with a Fed LR Mag match primer, set to 2.55" OAL. Work up. This is a Ruger level load. Not for the faint of heart

I shot my Stainless Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 for the first time in like 4 years a couple of weekends ago. Loaded a 405 Laser Cast over a healthy dose of Varget and "Chaka-Boom!!!", still shoots to point of aim. That muzzle break will shake yo' cookies if ya' know what I mean, recoil with them loads was a bit much. I plan on shootin' up the rest of my loads so's I can make some lighter loads for regular shootzen. Them big fat 405 grain boolits are cool with interactive targets. You came hear the boolits screamin' a war cry when ya' shoot em' at a distance. Really!

The 28g of 4198 chronies to within a couple fps of the 15.1g of unique plinker load with my heavy 440s. A completely different feel though, both very accruate.
