View Full Version : .40 brass-how often do you REALLY have to trim?

So I've been running all my .40 brass through the trim cycle (what a pain in the BALLS!), but really how much does it have to stretch before it's actually necessary? Any difference which MAKES no difference IS no difference...
Do you-
a. Trim it EVERY time you fire it
b. Fire it 2 or 3 times, THEN trim it
c. Never trim it, no biggie with straight-walled pistol rounds
So for real, what do you guys do? I'm thinking not running max loads, negligible difference in contact area, OAL good, running through LOTS of pistol rounds, do you REALLY have to bother?

It's freakin' pistol ammo, tumble, deprime, lube, size, prime, charge, seat bullet, crimp and be done with it.
Trim pistol brass, only if you're 918v.

I knew one guy who trimmed 40 brass. Exactly one.
I've loaded somewhere north of 70,000 rounds of 40 and have never trimmed a case. I've had some cases go 24 firings.

Hey Bro..
There is no need to trim .40sw brass or any other straight wall pistol brass. Rifle brass always.
Peace

Trim?
I wanna trim my brass, but it ain't shiny enough yet.
I haven't trimmed .40 yet.
Only FC 9mm needs trimmin'.
Trim it? Only if it's Union brass, & only if you're qualified & it's in your job description. If you're not sure then it's best to stop production & call a union meeting to discuss the matter.

Since its mostly short ( for head spacing off the case mouth ) it seems long would be nice. For me mixed head stamps as long as the primer seats tight - no cracks - ,,,,works fer meee . I watch the powder weight & seating depth ,,,,, I'm done.

Derrrrr.....
Thanks, looked at context, not handle! :)
Thought it might be a union reference (Godless Socialists!!)
(Exit stage right, donning Kevlar & Nomex garments and ducking for cover...)

Bottleneck cases only, particularly .17 HMR.
The case walls are so thin that they stretch way too much even during the first firing. And the necks need to be anealed again every other reload.

I trim all of my rimfire cases prior to reloading.

This is some good stuff. It is kind of like changing the channel on the TV, and the same thing is on every channel. Like when I used to have like 20 HBOs.

Trim pistol brass, only if you're 918v.
One step I will add to this, I used my RCBS case prep center primer pocket brush and out of 150 rounds had a PILE of crap from that...
I don't EVEN like my Lee hand primer, don't wanna have any issues with primer seating.
Threadjack, anybody got a better suggestion for a primer tool?
Steve Koski
07-12-2008, 06:21 AM
1) Don't clean pistol primer pockets.
2) The Dillon 550 is a great primer tool.
No. No. Do clean the primer pockets... Not cleaning your primer pockets is like not wiping your butt.
BigSlick

+1 on a 550.
Skip da pocket cleanin on a pistol round.
I did a few wit my RCBS Case Prep Center (excellent tool by the way ;) ) an decided I would get back ta doin that soon as I was shootin consistently enough dat I could see da difference a clean vs a uncleaned primer pocket makes on a target.
I ain't there yet
Wiping your butt is like making the bed. You're just going to mess it up again anyway.
Ok... don't clean the primer pocket, don't wipe your butt, and don't clean the inside of the case with a Q-Tip either!

If your butt doesn't get wiped, I bet that it'll be red under the crust.

I been trying to explain the bed part to my wife for years. She washes my underwear, so she also knows the rest of the story.

Just rub some Dillon Case Lube on dat and it'll clear right up.
