What's "fire-forming"?
Most simple example: take a 30-06 cartridge firing it in your Ackley Improved 30-06 the brass comes out of the Ackely perfectly formed to fit it ....

What's "fire-forming"?
Fire forming is one process wildcatters use to convert one case into another. Below I'll post some photo's of parent and fireformed cases
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j212/Tailgunner1954/Picture215.jpg
Parent on left, wildcat on right, notice the difference in the shoulder angle?
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j212/Tailgunner1954/Std_vs_Ackley.jpg
A slightly easier to see example of fireforming
In this last example, the cartridge on the right started out as a 50 BMG case, and was fireformed into a straight wall case (a rim was also added). BTW, the puny little guy on the left is a 45-70 round

So fire forming is a good way to blow both your hands off?
Maybe for the kiddies, but not for those of us that wear man pants. :biggrinjester:
Seriously, it's required for all "Improved" cartridge designs, and is often required when converting a available brass to properly fit into an obsolete firearm.
In the case of the "12ga From Hell" (last photo) it's annealed than about 50% formed with a tapered expansion plug, annealed again, fireformed to 90% with a charge of pistol powder & cream of wheat covered with a wax bullet, and than final formed with a "light" load (270gr powder under a 730gr lead slug).

I am, AL. I am. Still viable, vital, and virile.
To add to TG's explanation: when you have a long chambered rifle; size up to size down and leave a bubble or ring of brass at the shoulder and fireform the brass to the chamber to prevent continued brass stretching. Makes brass last longer when used only in that long chamber if the sizer die is set correctly for future sizing.

Want a partial list of cartridges that people COULD be reloading for?
I'll be happy to send you the listing of the cartridges in my collection. It's in Excel/Quatro-Pro (depending on which computer I send it from), you could easly strip off most of the dimentionall & headstamp data, leaving you with a sorted by bullet diameter & case length list.

IMPORTANT NOTE -- If you have any changes to your data from here on, please put it in as a separate reply and don't just edit your entry. As I'm going down through this thread accumulating the data it would be terribly difficult if the data "behind" where I'm at is changing. Thanks.
Incidentally, do feel free to add either calibers that you have given up reloading for and those that you're thinking of getting into.

This thread makes me want to Market some different cal. boolit shaped cereal, with little colored pistol and revolver marshmellows of course. It would have to be called........."Reloaded: lots of bran for the correct power factor and extra minerals." The prize would only be a used primer cuz I'm too damn cheap.

Just don't make the cereal look like a 7.7x58 Arisaka. From the data reported in so far, that caliber has the dubious honor of being the only caliber that nobody currently loads for, nobody is planning on loading it, and that has more than one person who loaded for it but quit. (There are several calibers in the 0/0/1 category, but no others in the 0/0/>1.)
On the other hand, if you want the cereal to succeed then shape it to look like the expected suspects; .45 ACP, 9mm, .38 Spl, .40 S&W, .357 Mag, .223, .44 Mag, .30-06, or .308 (in that order) to capture the hearts of current reloaders.
Incidentally, once Slick and I figure out the right way of making this data useful to the GP community we'll get it posted. Keep those updates coming! Not only is the "currently loading for" data useful, but I think that knowing the calibers that people have quit loading for might even be more useful. (Personally, I like to talk to people who not only use something and like it, but also those who tried it and quit to see if their reason for stopping might be pertinent to my situation.)

I've only been loading for rifle lately:

When you say "lately" do you mean that you've given up reloading for pistols or have you just not done it in a while? Either way, which pistol calibers have you reloaded for?

Hey Craig, I've got an update for my list....
I just came across an original Trap Door that I'm going to need to load for...
It was in the basement & I had forgotten that I had it.
Amazing what you find if you dig in the vault far back enough !
Be so kind as to add .45-70 to my list.

As in outta brass (except for a very generous contribution from a fellow dat shoots .41 Mag runnin around here) and da measely 83 pieces I got in Tulsa.
Starline say my order backordered until sometime soon, maybe February. Could be sooner, could be later, they just guessin.
Said some fella from GP bought da last a what they had in stock.
At least it went to a good cause ;)
The other stuff, I'm either out of completely or what brass I have is on the last firing (maybe two left) and about ready to be retired. I can tell ya, nobody in da world wish brass lasted forever like me right now.
My Crack Killa and 500 brass got some miles on it, Last I bought was before last Kwaanza, I haven't shot much, but my brass pool is a relatively small one, so I get a good ratation.
Down to one bag of decent 10mm, .357 Mag is way low too. Got some from Gwalchi last year, shot hell out of it, got maybe 5 firings on it now with 4 of those being full house load workups.
I'm jus snivelin, I hate it when I ain't sittin on a mountain a new or known once fired or at least got some decent life left in it brass. Gimme da heebie jeebies.
I am stone cold outta 06 brass except for maybe 8-10 pieces dat are crimped, which is OK, but... you know how it is.
Ain't a real life problem, but it eat at me if ya know what I mean

Cohutt,
I got a bit of a jump on most folks- I started loading in 1969, when I was 10 years old, on a Herters single stage, for 270 Winchester for my Dad, and 300 Savage for a new-to-me Savage 99, that I still have.
I know the brand of press, but the real question is how many presses and what models.

This should come as no surprise. I tried to add up. The top 3 reloaded pistol rounds posted. Only ones currently loaded. I came up with 87= 45ACP, 75= 9MM, and 51= 40S&W so the 99 year old 45ACP is still king.
