Just returned from the knife and gun show with a Lyman 450 with 2 sizing dies and top punches for the 38 and 44mag.($70.00).
I was going to hold out for the Star/magma but.......well you know how it is..
How many here use the Lyman?
Came home and made my first ingots from wheel weights.
I guess, with y'alls help I may be able to make some boolits soon.:)

I'm using a 450. Works great. I set my heat gun on low and lay it on the bench blowing on the sizer for a few minutes before I start and it stays warm for a long time. The only complaint I have is if you drop it on concrete, it might break. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks for the replies. I have downloaded the"owner's manual" - it says what everything does but does not say how you are supposed to adjust it for the application.....any ideas on an idiot's guide to using a Lyman 450?

The nuts on the rod that push the bullet out of the die can be adjusted to control the depth the bullet goes into the die. Fiddle around with it until you get it so's lube isn't all over the place and only in the grooves. Freak has a video of the 450 in action up on youtube. I've only ran four maybe five hundred pounds through mine they are a very good machine. If you put too much heat to it too fast the cast iron will expand faster than the plug in the lube cylinder and you'll blow the O ring if you start using it right away, (twice). You can call Lyman for advice, the people I've talked to are knowledgeable, pleasant and seem to enjoy their job. which is a nice switch from tech support for electronics.

I use an old Lyman 45 that I got cheap on eBay one day. Works great, but I admit that I haven't dealt with any non-square base bullets yet. (I forget who had the problem, but another GPer has run into problems with excess lube on the base of his non-square base bullets.)

That's not with the Lymans only, the RCBS and Reddings suffer the same issue.
The Star doesn't as is punches the bullet from the bottom.
Not sure about the ballisticast.
You can dish the 'I' part of the die if ya want, to alleviate it, but ya gotta keep in mind all ya bevel base bullets when ya do. Otherwise, you a make a bigger mess, or, end up with a lotta 'I' punches.

That would be me. someone suggested that I take a piece of foam soft drink container and use it as a base plug in the sizing die. This works well for about 50 bullets, but its easy to replace when it goes south.
