I use Corrosion X after a few good passes with a brush and hot soapy water.

How do you clean up after corrosive primers, or black powder ?

I use either hot soapy water or patches soaked with windex.I then clean with a common solvent such as hoppes, or shooters choice. Then lubricate very well. I have never had any problems with my mauser, or nagant corroding after this process.

windex after the range, then hot soapy water for the cleaning.

Followed by Hoppes 9.

I use old Rogaine bottles, fill 'em with Windex and squirt the bore at the range while it is still warm, dry patch, then Hoppe's #9 to hold until I get home for a good cleaning. No, you may NOT ask where I get Rogaine bottles or why I have them!

I was just going to ask that question too.

Salt dissolves in water, not so well in oil. There is a new Hoppes for corrosive ammo but it's only 10% water and $12 a bottle. Warm water works best. For some reason I've almost always used soapy/dish soap water but I'm not sure the soap helps much. Water is cheap and warm water is best. Just make sure to dry well and oil.

I take one of those 24 ounce sport bottles and put a couple of drops of liquid dish soap in it. I leave the bottle on the dash of the car when shooting. To clean, pull the bolt and squirt a bunch of soapy water through the bore. Take the remaining water and squirt the bolt. I normally then run a bore brush and some patches through the bore. I'll run a patch of CLP through the bore and wipe down the bolt before going home. When you get home, clean as usual.

I'm glad this came up, as I'll be firing my Mauser with old Egyptian ammo on friday. Is foaming bore cleaner good enough right after firing, or should I windex then foam it up?

Windex first.

Cold, warm, or hot water will get the done equally well. Hot water dries faster so that's it's biggest selling point. But all three temps will get the job done. The addition of soap, while nice, isn't necessary. Doesn't add anything to the actual cleaning process. A holdover step/ingrediant from BP cleaning over the years.

Myself, I use a few squirts of Windex w/ammonia because it's handy to tote around. A bit down the barrel followed by a couple three patches, some on the boltface then a wipedown with a rag and all is good.

My dad told me that there were a couple jokers who took their Garands into the shower with them. This was a long time ago in da Army.

I use hot, soapy water, followed by hot water. Then, I flush with hot water.

After that, use any conventional cleaning routine.

Windex is unnecessary. Lots of hot water is what does the trick.

Did I mention that I like to use hot water? If it is a pistol, I literally stick it under the hot water tap in the kitchen, much like Steve Martin did in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid". It is still an effective cleaning technique, but rifles are a little too long for this approach.

Windex is a lot easier to carry to the range than hot water. You can also pee in your barrel.

Have you tried the latter, Steve?

No. My wife yells at me cause I can't hit the toilet. How am I supposed to hit a 308 caliber hole?

Don't know. I have heard from numerous vets when BARs, Garands, Carbines, M14s would freeze up in combat, they would urinate on the firearm to unfreeze it.

The water does not have to be hot. Hot water will work a little bit faster, and evaporate a little bit quicker, though.

A Windex bottle is handy for squirting water into the bore, I agree. It just doesn't have to contain Windex. Of course, I am a first class CRB.

Single malt Scotch or a good grade of bourbon will also work. I just prefer water.
