I'm tired of picking and shaking cases out by hand. What's a cheap way to seperate media and brass?

How about a cheap plastic collander, should run you about a buck. And maybe use a kitty litter scoop too. While we are on the subject of kitty litter a litter pan may be useful.

Thats what I was going to do. I've just seen some somewhat elaborate homemade ones. Just curious if there is a reason for it.

well the midway frankford arsenal package deal is cheap - includes a tumbler, media, polish, bucket, separator for $50 when it's on sale - $60 otherwise. Considering the tumbler is $40 or so on it's own... $10 for media, polish, bucket and separator is FAIRLY cheap, if not completely CRB.

I wish I would have got that deal, but I bought just the tumbler awhile ago.

Works good too!

Wheres all the 5 gal buckets with holes drilled in them?
Don't have a pic but I use a colander. Didn't even buy it, I stole it from my wife.
I've thought about a fancy separator but I always end up spending the money on reloading components.

Can't do it. All the buckets are full of brass!
HA!! I got you all beat on this CRB area...
I grabbed an empty 1gal distilled water jug (milk jug) from work before it went in the trash. I cut the top off (with work's razor blade) leaving the handle in tact. Poked a bunch of holes in the bottom (on 30sec. of company time.) I hold it in the large plastic bag my tumbler came in & shake allowing the media to fall into the bag. Hows that for CRB?

Best and cheapest is the same bag I use to pick brass up at the range. Laundry bag with the big holes in it. Then I pour the media with the brass through the bag into a five gallon paint bucket. Pull the bag up and shake it around. Done.

Hello Steve,
FWIW This is what I do.
Scrounge up a 5 gallon bucket and a plastic car wash pail /bucket
*Make sure the pail fits into the 5 gal bucket and stops at the rim.
Drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of the pail.
Insert pail into your 5 gal bucket, pour in brass and media. Shake vigoursly for about 20 seconds. Viola brass and media are seperated. And you probably spent less than two bucks IF that..
The pail is deep enough to keep the media inside it rather than poping out onto the floor during the shaking..
Peace

When I made the colander in the pictures, I discovered that shaking a pail with more than about two pints of brass in it will put you flat on your back in bed.
I developed the way to TUMBLE the brass, but so far I can tumble it a lot faster than I can separate, sort or inspect it.

I picked up an old deep fryer basket from a thrift store for 50 cent.
I just pour my tumbler in it and shake it over a 5gal bucket.

CRB? I'm drawing a blank and probably don't know what this acronym stands for.
A tumbler and plastic colander came with my reloading kit. I hold the colander over a plastic bucket, pour the brass/media in, and with my hands in rubber gloves stir the media and brass until the media is gone. Works pretty well. Of course since its the only way I've done it I don't know any better.

Cheap rat bastard.
Or if you're me, you're a CFRB, I think you can figure that one out.

Thanks for the replies. I think I might go with a collender and bucket.

OK, I guess I would apply for the ERB (e=expensive) !
I used a salade dryer to 'tumble' the media out but was not satisfied so i just bought the Dillon separator and it does a very fast and good job at it ...

I have tried a colander and its no wear near as fast as my laundry bag from Walmart. Get the walmart bag with the holes in it + the 5 gallon bucket, use it as a range brass bag, then if you still want a colander I will be SHOCKED.
