View Full Version : New respect for the .17 HMR

When I first saw the .17 I couldn't believe what a worthless cartridge it was. I had a pristine early 70's model Winchester 9422M lever action in .22WMR that would surely do anything the new .17 would do.
All that changed last weekend when my brother brought his new Stevens bolt action .17 over for a little turtle/target practice. 140 yard shots into a target a little bigger than your thumb felt too easy with the bull barrel/accutrigger combo. That little bullet shoots like a laserbeam out to about 130 yards before it starts dropping.
Definitely next on my short list.

i witnessed a friend drop a small spike buck with one at 125+ yards. We had been helping a couple of the local motorcycle leos get new scopes sighted in on their deer rifles out on his property. At dusk it wandered out of the woods on the hill behind the 100yrd target, shot through the heart it made it back to the woods (about 20 yards) but not much farther.

I asked why he would take the shot with that gun on a deer at 100+ yards, he said he was sure he could hit it where he needed to-

damned if he didn't

I have the Savage 93/17 bull barrel. After a trigger job (horrendous out of the box), it shoots bug holes. The barrel took some break-in to smooth out and reduce fouling. Groups would open up within 20 rds initially. Now I can shoot a box of rounds with no noticeable difference in accuracy. Fun rifle. Hell on ground squirrels. Biggest thing I've taken with it is a 'coon.

Mine's a 93R17 Savage, stainless hb, plywood thumbhole stock, Accu-trigger.
Barska 6-18 scope in Weaver 4X4 rings.

!/2" groups are the norm @ 100 yds with Hornady ammo (17 gr V-Max)
3/4" using Speer TNT (17 gr hp's)
1 1/4" with 20 gr bullets,(any !) doesn't seem to like them a lot.

The Barska scope is set up for 17 gr bullet trajectory; It seems to be a bit better optics than the BSA Sweet 17 series. Slightly clearer without edge fuzziness at extreme edges of the field of view.

This is going to be the new prarie dog rimfire, just a bit more effective than the Ruger 77-22 LR w/ 2-7 Beeman Blue Ribbon airgun scope.

What I been thinking about is getting one of the Ruger 10/22's (77/22?) that are in .22mag and converting it to a .17...That would be cool.

The reason Ruger stopped making the 10/22 Mag is the receiver couldn't handle it long before it started to crack. Volquartsen makes them from steel now and that is the only way I would go. I was of the same feeling that the HMR was worthless and the HM2 was even more worthless, but have lately changed my mind and would really like a regular 10/22 in HM2. Since they are Stinger cases that are necked down instead of regular LR you do get a little more power and a lot flatter shooting than a .22. As for the power difference, don't care, it's a rimfire and I'm not going after anything bigger than a jack rabbit.

If I get me a .17 it's gonna be a .17HMR, but thanks for the info! Doesn't Savage make a pretty good one. I saw a bolt action stainless with bull barrel and a thumbhole stock that seemed pretty nice once at Academy.Anybody know anything about them?

I love my savage 93LH , the best part is the accu trigger system real easy to do a mod on it, my pull is around 2 lbs, it helps alot on the longer shots

Now if I could just get one of the RED accu-triggers, I'd be happy !
I don't think they're offered on the rimfire rifles.

Get the savage BTVS I had one really liked it.

I ended up selling to buy more EBR for the coming ban. When the ban is back on I will get another BTVS.
